Canon now officially confirms what I have been telling you for months: There is a worldwide shortage of parts!

Share

You might remember that back in May I told you that there was a supply issue that delayed the launch of many cameras and some lenses across the industry. So now we have at leas one official confirmation via Canon:

Currently, we are experiencing delivery delays for the following products due to more orders than expected and also due to the impact of global parts supply. We apologize to our customers and business partners for the inconvenience. Products are scheduled to be shipped one after another, but it is expected that the new camera body EOS R5 Mark II will take a long time to ship. We apologize
again for keeping our eager customers waiting for such a long time. We will continue to take measures to ensure a stable product supply so that we can deliver the products as soon as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

That’s why the new Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM II was announced in late August and not in late June. Similar fate for the upcoming 24-70mm f/2.0 GM lens that could now be announced around October. It gets more complicated with cameras which might be announced in January-February instead of the previously scheduled October-November timeframe. More about that in my next posts and youtube videos ;)

ONE MORE THING: Trusted sources knew a new FX9 successor is long due….but maybe Sony once more delayed the launch for production issues reason?

USA: Amazon, BHphoto, Adorama.
Europe: FotoErhardt, FotoKoch, Calumet, WexUK.

Mirrorless market share in China: Canon doubles Sony

Share

A Weibo account shared the market share numbers for China:

The “2024-2029 Digital Camera Industry Market In-depth Analysis and Development Strategy Research Report” released by the China Research Institute of Industry pointed out that the competitive landscape is still mainly dominated by well-known brands such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji. With its strong technical research and development capabilities and brand influence, Canon continues to lead the market with a market share of nearly 50%. Sony and Nikon ranked second and third, with market shares of 26.1% and 11.7%, respectively.

So Canon sold twice the cameras than Sony. Moreover Canon’s full-frame micro-single camera market share (number of units) has been leading for eight consecutive months since December 2023, ranking first.

According to official data, Canon’s second quarter financial report shows that sales of mirrorless cameras represented by the full-frame model EOS R6 Mark II and the APS-C frame model EOS R50 are both good. As a mid-range bucket model, the R6II has long occupied the top spot on the full-frame best-selling list since its launch.

With the launch of Canon’s second-generation blockbuster product R5, judging from the current popularity of market sales and pre-orders, Canon’s momentum will only increase in the next few months. The only variable comes from supply. Canon’s official website in Japan recently showed that the delivery period for new orders for the new EOS R5 Mark II camera will be extended, mainly because the orders received far exceeded expectations and the supply was in short supply, coupled with the impact of tight global parts supply. This announcement is only for the Japanese market, and it is not clear whether it will affect overseas markets.

The hottest SILLY (and 100% fake) rumor I’ve ever heard: Black and white camera Sony A7L coming this week :)

Share

Just for fun, this is a rumor that gets the gold medal for hottest FAKE rumor I’ve ever heard :)  This is what I got tonight from an anonymous source:

SONY has prepared an ultra-high density preservation camera for IBC, the alpha7 L, a black and white camera with an Exmor R image sensor, where L stands for Luma.
It has an effective pixel count of 48 megapixels and supports full-frame uncropped 8K/30p, 4K/60p recording.
It’s worth releasing at IBC because it can consistently record high quality uncropped FHD video, a feature in line with SONY’s flagship broadcast cameras, such as the HDC-5500.

A Black and White 8K video camera….I really struggle to find anyone that would need this for serious production :)  Still, one of my dream cameras would be to get a Sony A7r camera with Black and White sensor. Something like an E-mount version of the Leica Monochrome. But my feeling is that there is near zero chance this will ever happen :(

Back to reality: I have NO information about any camera coming soon (definitely nothing in September).
