Sony announces World’s Smallest 1M-Pixel Lens Module

Share

Sony announced the World’s Smallest Super Small 1M-Pixel Lens Module:

The world’s smallest 1M-pixel lens module (2.6 mm*2 (W) × 3.3 mm (D) × 2.32 mm (H)) was realized by newly developing a super small 1M-pixel image sensor with a chip size of 2 mm × 2 mm and a super-small low-profile lens with a head size of 2.6 mm × 2.6 mm. This lens module is also equipped with a low power consumption mode that reduces power consumption by approximately 10 % to 60 % compared to existing image sensors with an equivalent number of pixels for mobile applications. This makes it the ideal lens module for super-small and lightweight mobile devices.
The IU233N2-Z and IU233N5-Z will help to further reduce the size and weight of mobile devices such as head-mounted displays and smart watches, and to develop new markets such as IoT and drones.

This sensor is probably going used by future wearable devices.

Don:My wish list for the A7iii.
Sensor.  The current 24MPixel sensor means I can print up to 20 x 13” at 300dpi.  As I never actually print larger than 16 x 12” then I have no wish for a higher resolution sensor.  But I do find it limiting that the A7ii has worse high ISO noise than both the A7Sii and the A7Rii, so I would welcome a move to a BSI sensor.
Autofocus.  A similar system to the A6500 would be great, mainly to give fast focussing and good compatibility with Canon lenses.
Stabilisation. Just an update to make it as good as the A6500.
Battery. If Sony can pack all the electronics into an A6xxx sized body, then I’m sure that they could make room for a bigger battery in the A7 series. If not, then adding about 5mm to the height of the camera would make it easier to hold, and would give extra room for a new larger battery.
Video.  The A7S and A7R cameras are both great for video, so why not concentrate on stills photography for the A7iii?  No video would a smaller menu and make everything easier to find.
Backup.  No video would also mean that there is no need for microphone and headphone sockets.  These could be replaced with a full sized USB 3 socket.  With the correct firmware this could allow direct backup to a USM memory stick.  Or just add a second SD card slot instead.
Write speed.  Please increase the write speed to the SD card(s).
RAW and JPEG.  I find Sony colours a bit cool.  Could Sony add a menu item to allow you to choose between the standard Sony colours and a slightly warmer option?  And of course allow proper uncompressed RAW without wasting space on the SD cards.

Reminder: Sony has a press conference on January 8 and still one more camera to announce

Share

On January 8 at 5pm PT you can follow the Sony CES press conference live here on SonyAlphaRumors (there should be a video live stream). Like I told you before Sony usually does not announce new cameras at this show.

The only thing that gives us a very tiny bit of hope that we might get a camera is the fact that Sony registered a new camera with the code “WW541200”. But that camera might as well be announced in February before the CP+ show start.

Sony’s priority for 2017 are lenses, lenses and lenses!

Share

To give you a very general heads-up of what’s Sony’s goal for 2017. It is without doubt another year where Sony will focus on the FE lens development and release. This includes a new 16-35mm GM and new telephoto lenses. And a few A-mount lenses will get an update too.
There will be of course new cameras (A7 mark III and the A7rIII or A9). But the crazy camera release circle Sony had back in 2013-2014-2015 is definitely over.
