Tokina has discontinued production of the atx-m 85mm F1.8 FE lens. Rumor has it that this lens was actually manufactured by Viltrox. Now that the Chinese company has a good reputation, I think they no longer need the partnership with Tokina. Viltrox already sells its own 85mm lens under its own name.

I have two smaller good news on the new Sony A1II that will be announced next week on November 19:
1) Near SAME Sony A1 pricing: I got the Sony A1II pricing info for Europe: It’s 7.499 EUR. Back when the Sony A1 was launched in 2021 the camera had a price tag of 7.299 EUR. So this means we “only” got a 200 Euro increase that is definitely also justified by the inflation we had all across the globe. The Sony A1 price will drop soon worldwide. First official price drop have already been spotted at Sony France (500 Euro off) and Australia ($1100 AUSD off).
2) Shipment BEFORE Christmas: The Sony A1II will start to ship out in early December already. Usually new Sony cameras do ship out 2-3 months after announcement but in this case Sony seems to have made a new and better choice when it comes to availability.
Sony Q2 financial report has been published. The Imaging Business is doing well and keeps being profitable with constant sales but…there is a “but”. Sony writes:
The imaging business, which significantly grew year-on-year in the first quarter ended June 30, 2024, mainly in China, was essentially flat year-on-year in the current quarter. As a result, we have incorporated into our forecast a pro-active change to a more cautious production and inventory plan in preparation for the year-end selling season.
I am not an expert and have no clue what they really means with this. But it just doesn’t sound good to me. Maybe this is why back in Spring I told you Sony has slowed down the release roadmap and delayed the launch of many products. They see the market slowing down and want to see where it’s headed?
As you know, Sony has always refused to offer a price drop on its flagship model. Well, finally the wall of resistance is breaking down and the Sony A1 has gotten its first price cut of 500 euros at Sony France. This is good news because the Sony A1II is said to be about the same price as the Sony A1 without this discount! I was afraid for a moment the A1II would cost MUCH more!
