A Hoi An street scene, Vietnam.
I captured these two elderly men playing the ancient game of Xiangqi after dark – first played over 4000 years ago. The earliest Chinese xiangqi pieces discovered so far date are from the Song (960 – 1279 AD) and Yuan (1271 – 1368 AD) dynasties.
I particularly like the concentration on their faces. The thing that led me to take the photograph was the flickering candlelight. That same night, the whole of Hoi An was dimly lit with only lantern and candlelight to help celebrate the monthly full moon festival.
I like the sense of preparation – the candlestick on standby, the packet of cheap cigarettes. These elements seem to give the photograph a sense of timelessness and makes me wonder, just how long was this game to be played?
The movement of his right hand contrast the stillness of his left, with cigarette slowly smoking itself away showing the true level of concentration and skill present in this curb-side clash.
Taken handheld with my Sony A7ii using SEL5518Z at ISO 6400.

My Sony A7s Landscape Portfolio
Here’s one of my favorite Shots of 2015. Every christmas I visit my parents and take a little hike on the nearby mountain to get the first sunbeams. Pretty relaxing – also pretty beautiful.

In Studio with Hilary Riley
Got a chance to work with a rookie client back in early December, a friend of mine named Hilary. She was an absolute natural and so so easy to work with. I look forward to using her for upcoming projects. Full gallery available on my website, link below. All images shot on the Sony A7R II with a combination of the 55mm Sony/Zeiss 1.8, the 28mm Sony and the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II through a Metabones IV.

I took a5100 and kit lens – what came out was amazing. It was minus 15C and sea-watar was plus 5C.
