New Sony A55 review and superdeals at Adorama

Techradar (Click here) tested the Sony A55: “It would be very easy to dismiss this novel design as a gimmick, but for certain photographers it will provide a real advantage. Image quality is similar to contemporary conventional SLR cameras, but the size and weight of the A55 is much reduced, making this camera ideal for those who travel extensively, or just wish their SLR was a bit smaller and lighter.” A bit strange that the verdict sounds good but the final rating is 3/5 stars only. I checked the ratings from other cameras. The Nikon D7000 got three stars and the Pentax K-5 four stars. Both cameras do share the same A55 sensor but it looks like the Pentax K-5 can squeeze out the best image quality from the sensor.

If you still do not own the Sony A55 you might take a look on the latest deals at Adorama (Click here). They are offering $100 instant rebates on many A55 double lens kits. If you need more than the kit lens only go for it!

(SR4) There will be no camera with three layer (foveon) sensor in 2011-2012

Share

Last week we posted a rumor (with lo SR2 credibility) about a possible Sony camera with foveon sensor that could be announced in 2012. One of our good sources just said that yes, it’s true Sony developing three layered sensors (like the Sigma foveon sensor) but there will be no camera in 2011-2012 using such a sensor. According to the source the technology is not mature for commercial use yet but it could be ready for commercialization in 3-4 years.

P.S.: List of Sigma Foveon cameras at Amazon.

Sony patent for expanded dynamic range imaging device

Share

Sony patented a new expanded dynamic range imaging device (Source: Egami). The following technology allows to simultaneously obtain a high sensitivity and low sensitivity signal from one single pixel! So there is no need to combine different images to create a HDR image. It will create a High Dynamic Range picture form the same Image. To bad it’s a patent only and we might have to wait for years before to see a camera using such a sensor :(

New Sony Cine Alta camera with over 4K !

Share

A current Sony Cine Alta camera (not the rumored 8k camera!)

We are not talking about a new Alpha camera but it’s good to hear were Sony is going with their large sensor video cameras. According to fdtimesSony is planning to show the prototype of a new >4K motion picture camera at NAB 2011 (April)“.

They had the chance to see the camera. The camera has a PL mount, an 8K sensor(!!!) with 8768 x 2324 pixel single CMOS sensor (that’s 20.4 Megapixels), Super35 3-perf size, 16-bit RAW output, 16:8:8. SIMPLY AMAZING! To record all that data the new Cine Alta camera will take use of a 1 TB Memory Card!

Sony is really releasing one amazing video camera after another (remember the Full Frame and NEX videocameras). Would love they would be that fast in releasing Alphacameras too!

(SR4) NEX-C3 to be in Stock late May

Share

Short update about the upcoming new NEX camera that will be announced in April. According to one of our source the NEX-C3 will be available from May 26th. We don’t have exact specs about the camera yet, we only know it has a 16MPX sensor and an improved body design. As you already know the [shoplink 3000]Sony NEX-3 has been officially discontinued[/shoplink].

Message to our sources: We received a few info about a second NEX camera. Some of you do mention a NEX-C5 and some a NEX-7. Are those different cameras or the same camera?

P.S: Thanks AXL ;)

Toshiba and Sony Execute Definitive Agreement.

The Nagasaki Technology Center

On April 1 the Nagasaki Technology Center will be officially transferred from Toshiba to Sony. The purchase price is 53 billion yen. The acquisition should help Sony to increase the production capacity for wafers for CCD and CMOS sensors from about 25,000 to about 50,000 units per year. They will produce Exmor and Exmor-R sensors for both mobile phones and digital cameras.

Let’s hope this will help Sony to shorten the release time for some of their products (See A77 and the new fullframe cameras).
