(SR4) The Sony A77 can take both SD and CF cards, has a bigger battery and records in 720p60!

Share

A small update about the [shoplink 3228]Sony A700[/shoplink] successor called “A77”:

1) The A77 can be a little bit more bulky, heavier and can produce more photo’s from the NEW battery (around 1.000 pictures). The battery is also compatible with the Pro DSLR which Sony will launch months after the A77.

2) The camera can do 720p60 and 720p30. We are not certain yet if it can do 1080p24 (but probably yes)

3) It will take CF+SD+MS cards, of which you can use two at the same time (CF+MS or SD +MS or only SD)

I repeat, we will see a prototype verison at Photokina. The real camera will be announced early 2011!

Questions and answers to the Sony SLT development team (Photoclubalpha)

Share

Kevin Barret had the unique chance to interview the Sony SLT development team. You can read the post at Photoclubalpha (Click here)!

Some interesting notes:

– “It’s not impossible to include Manual Exposure control for video, however we chose not to include it in these models because of some basic limitations to Aperture and Shutter speed adjustment when any camera is recording video. Specifically, there is a limit to the range of shutter speeds that are appropriate for 30P capture – practically, it can’t be much longer than 1/60 sec or much shorter than 1/250 – so we chose not to include Shutter priority. There’s much more creative freedom in Aperture Priority, which the cameras do provide. However, Phase Detect AF has certain minimum aperture requirements (typically f/5.6), so Aperture Priority defaults to Manual AF to allow a wide range of aperture adjustment.”

– Because phase detect AF relies on a fairly wide max aperture (in all DSLRs), these cameras’ exposure control system defaults to the lens’ max aperture during video recording with AF. We understand that this might be a challenge when using very wide aperture lenses under very bright conditions, but the typical use of these models will be variable aperture zoom lenses.

-The sensor outputs 30P and the data is recorded in 1920×1080 60i so as to be compatible with the AVCHD codec. However, 30P recording in MP4 is available as well. The max data rate of 24Mbps (theoretical limit of AVCHD) is not offered, as these models are primarily still cameras.

(SR4) UPDATED with POLL: What’s coming next at Photokina! A77 prototype, no Sony NEX7 and Zeiss E-mount lenses after Photokina?

Share

According to SonyAlphaRumors sources Sony will show the new [shoplink 3228]Sony A700[/shoplink] successor protoype(!) at Photokina. The camera is NOT ready for the market. The final release is expected by early 2011. Sony could share some more details about the camera specs (like it was when they showed [shoplink 3032]Sony A900[/shoplink] prototype). The camera will have a bigger body size than the Sony A55 and very likely a new 18 Megapixel sensor to be on par with the Canon 7D resolution.

A new SonyAlphaRumors source gave us some more info about the A77. He said the A77 has 32 AF points, a new and better sensor than the one used for the Sony A55, a water resistant body, and same battery but much lower recovery time at high fps.
Answer the A7xx (or A77) poll questions at the post botom to suggest Sony what you like or dislike!

And again according to our sources the NEX7 will not be announced at Photokina. We don’t know yet if Sony will show a NEX7 prototype but the camera is due for release in January-February 2011. The reason for the “delay”? Answer: Sony is currently evaluating the [shoplink 3003]Sony NEX[/shoplink] market reaction.

We are sure Zeiss is working on new E-mount lenses but we don’t know if Zeiss will show them at Photokina. According to our sources they are working on 5 lenses that are based on the [shoplink 3255]ZM lenses design (Click here to see them on eBay)[/shoplink]

What else? We don’t know yet if Sony will finally release the 500mm G lens. There are also rumors (form external sources) about new Zeiss lenses but we can’t confirm those rumors now.

New Nikon D7000 and Pentax K-r with Sony sensor….

Share

The new Nikon D7000 (Click here) uses the same Sony A55 sensor! It would be nice to have an image comparison between the two cameras. Contact me a line if you find it somewhere!

UPDATE: That’s what dpreview wrote: “All of these pixels are packed onto a newly developed CMOS sensor, which is almost certainly the same or very similar to that in the Sony Alpha SLT-A55.”

Also the Pentax K-r (Click here) uses a Sony sensor. Pentax dropped the Samsung sensor in favour of Sony!

I can see a bright future for Sony sensors and you? Now let’s hope Sony will bring some new semi-pro and pro camera!
