Samyang 14mm f/2.8 surprise…a cheap high-quality lens for Sony Alpha cameras

Share

I always check Photozone and their lens reviews. Their latest Samyang 14mm f/2.8 review is quite a surprise: http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/532-samyang14f28eosff. They tested the lens on a Canon but the same lens is also available here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha camerasavailable here on eBay for Sony Alpha cameras. The lens itself costs 320EUR/420US$ works on both FF and APS-C cameras. The image quality is surprisely high! Photozone itself says that this is “may be the surprise product of the season”. One more review is available here on Dyxum.com

A little bit weird that the lens is sold with 4 different brands (Samyang, Bower, Rokinon, Walimex)! That’s why on Amazon US you find it as “Rokinon 14mm f/2.8” (click here).

The Sony APS sensor does captures 30p/25p progressive that is saved in interlaced container (60i/50i).

As I told you today I don’t care about 24p (it’s a consumer camera!) and for those of you that want to have 30p/25p don’t worry, “the Sony APS sensor captures in progressive, but the camera is saving the footage into an interlaced container with a doubled framerate. Every NLE can deal with it in post without doing anything special. You just have to tell it that the interlaced footage is actually progressive. It’s just saved in the industry-standard format.

It’s 50i (or 25p) for Europe (PAL) and 60i (or 30p) for the US.”

Sony NEX-VG10 reactions, discussions and new video.

Share

Beautiful Bali captured with the Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam camcorder from SonyElectronics on Vimeo.

Let’s start with the good news. This first NEX-VG10 doesn’t reveal any weird effect we see on many mirrorless cameras. Of course we still miss some “real” handheld footage but I hope someone will post that soon. And what does people think about the new camera? Read the reactions on DVXuser.com, Cinema5D, DPreview and Alphamountworld (Thanks Noisycamera!)

Philip Bloom, Luminous Landscape and many others are not happy with the missing 24p (or 30p) recording feature. I don’t care. 24p is something the consumer mass doesn’t need (it works for cinema productions only!). It would be nice to have 720/50p instead :)
