External Shutter release input
External AC power input
Camera shutter release output

use of two Lithium batteries and AA Battery (6A/8A)
IR output (!)

It sound slike a very powerful tool! The IR control looks like an amazing feature! I couldn’t find any price indication. Those are the links you should check:

Sony halted and evacuated six factories in northeastern Japan

Share

I am really shocked by what is happening in Japan. I wish things are less worse than the images on TV are showing us. All Japanese readers do have my solidarity.

A Sony related news (via Bloomberg):
Sony halted and evacuated six factories in northeastern Japan, said Yasuhiro Okada, a spokesman at the Tokyo-based company. He said the company was assessing the impact of power outages and damage to its facilities in the region, which make Blu-ray discs, magnetic heads and batteries.

(S3) New messages from Sony A77 testers…

Share

Image on top: Sony A77 and A700 overlay made by Ron (www.goldeneraphoto.com).

Our sources confirmed that the A77 is under heavy testing. Two anonymous testers contacted us to share the first impressions over the A77:

1)I am the photographer that reported earlier about the A77/A800 and I’d like to say that paired with the Zeiss lenses the images are very sharp, the 24MP res is good for big closeups, although I can’t reveal anything about the ISO noise. The focusing system is quite fast and accurate.

2) The second photographer said that resolution is amazing and they measured an 60% improvement over the [shoplink 3617]Sony A55[/shoplink]. The A77 is the best APS-C camera he ever tested. And the electronic viewfinder is also a huge step forward compared to the one used for the [shoplink 3617]Sony A55[/shoplink]. He said that you hardly will miss the optical viewfinder.

I am preparing a few new SR5 rumors over the next NEX and A77 cameras. So stay tuned on SonyAlphaRumors!

(SR3) Sony NEX-VG10 successor to be announced in April (with more professional controls and features)

Share

According to two new sources Sony is almost ready to launch the new Sony NEX-VG camera. It has more advanced controls and XLR audio entries. Reminder: Sony should announce the new NEX and camcorders in April (April 4?).

UPDATE: Another known source contacted us and said: “It will not be called VG-20. It will be announced at NAB. It will be a model offered by the pro video division. The XLR’s will be just a little box added to the original, consumer, version. At NAB will also be shown the new NXCAMs, etc. Sony is making a major push to cover Super 35 frame size, for filmmaking, to counteract RED and also Canon DSLR’s with HD function, also Panasonic’s advancements. Major Sony’s move is FF (in film terms), 4K, 3D, on the video front. I told you a long time ago that Sony will be dropping DSLR’s and this is exactly what is happening on the still camera front.” (Editor’s note: The source means that Sony will no more make cameras with optical viewfinders).

Check out the specs and price of the current NEX-VG10 at [shopcountry 3058].

(SR3) 3 CMOS sensor Alpha-mount high-res camera to be announced in April?

Share

We know Sony is going to announce a new NEX camera and four new camcorders on early April (probably on April the 4th).

But there should be also a huge surprise…the “Mystery cam”:
Five different new sources sent me info about a “Mystery cam”. The info I did receive are quite incomplete and I need some help from other new/old sources to figure out what the camera is. The only thing I know for sure is that it is not the A77, not a fullframe and not a NEX camera. It sounds like this could be a high-resolution alpha-mount camera (or camcorder). But That’s SR3 only for now.

There was a rumor one month ago about a 3 Cmos sensor camera:
Sony will release a new mirrorless camera with 3  CD (CMOS) sensors. Each of the sensors will be 6MP and the combined ISO will be up to 819 200 (up to 16mp combined image size). The camera will have an α-mount, contrast AF, 1.5x crop factor. It seems that working models are already floating around to selected individuals.” (Source: Photorumors)

All five new sources did gave me info that do support that rumor but with a few minor differences I need to check them before to post them here. But it sounds like Sony prepared an amazing surprise for us!

Poll: Should Sony use the DNG raw format?

Share

A SonyAlphaRumors reader sent me an interesting question:

With all these different RAW formats. Would it not be nice to have a standard. I was wondering if Alpha Rumors could put a vote or start a campaign to get Sony to switch to Adobe’s DNG format. It would be nice to see what others think about making a standard RAW format.“. Hmmm, let us know what you think and if you really care about DNG. Before you vote you should read the following info (Source: Wikipedia):

1) Objectives of the DNG format
* Digital image preservation (sometimes known as “archiving”): to be suitable for the purpose of preserving digital images as an authentic resource for future generations.
* Easy and/or comprehensive exploitation by software developers: to enable software to be developed without the need for reverse engineering; and to avoid the need for frequent software upgrades and re-releases to cater for new cameras.
* In-camera use by camera manufacturers: to be suitable for many camera manufacturers to use as a native or optional raw image format in many cameras.
* Multi-vendor interoperability: to be suitable for workflows where different hardware and software components share raw image files and/or transmit and receive them.

2) Characteristics
* Freely-available specification
* Format based on open specifications and/or standards: DNG is compatible with TIFF/EP, and various open formats and/or standards are used, including Exif metadata, XMP metadata, IPTC metadata, CIE XYZ coordinates, ICC profiles, and JPEG.
* Self-contained file format: a DNG file contains the data (raw image data and metadata) needed to render an image without needing additional knowledge of the characteristics of the camera.
* It has a version scheme built into it that allows the DNG specification, DNG writers, and DNG readers, to evolve at their own paces.
* Freely-available source-code-based software development kit (SDK).
* Documented to have no known intellectual property encumbrances or license requirements: there is both a “Digital Negative (DNG) Specification Patent License” which says that anyone can exploit DNG, and a statement that there are no known intellectual property encumbrances or license requirements for DNG.
