New F55 and F5 specs: Global Shutter (and Colors better than printed film).

Share

Peter Crithary from Sony twitted the info about the new F55 and F5 Cine Alte cameras. While these are not A or E mount cameras they have some very intriguing feature that we have to talk about. The full specs can be seen at ProSony. And the pdf files are here:
F5 http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/assets/files/show/highend/pdf/F5_Camera.pdf
F55 http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/assets/files/show/highend/pdf/F55_Camera.pdf
(Thanks OneGuy for finding the links).

Here are the key features:
1) These are modular cameras
2) The F55 has a Global shutter
3) Super wide color gamut that surpass printed film(!)
4) Super long choice of recording formats
5) Long-life Olivine Battery
6) 16 bit 4K RAW recording and 180 fps in 2K without line skipping or sensor windowing
7) 14 stop dynamic range (film has 16)

Imagine if some of these features would be implemented in future High End A or E mount cameras! For example global shutter on an photo camera would allow to take instant pictures with no lag (there is no mechanical shutter) and with no “click clack” noise. Modularity is also an aspect Sony could bring in a sort of hybrid A and E-mount cameras. And of course having a super wide color gamut and 14 stop dynamic range would be appreciated too! Today’s announcement shows us how far Sony sensor and camera technology can go today. And what we more “mass-camera” oriented camera can expect from the near future.

P.S.: Andrew from EosHD analyzed the single specs.

And here are the images of the color performance and the new f/2.0 PL mount lenses (damn would I have loved to see them in A-mount!):

New Sony tests (A99, RX1, Pancake zoom and Rokinon).

Share

Focus Numerique (translation here) published the detailed A99 ISO test. You can compare the A99 vs Nikon D600 comparison images here:
ISO 100: A99 vs D600
ISO 200: A99 vs D600
ISO 400: A99 vs D600
ISO 800: A99 vs D600
ISO 1600: A99 vs D600
ISO 3200: A99 vs D600
ISO 6400: A99 vs D600
ISO 12800: A99 vs D600
ISO 25600: A99 vs D600

As we learned from other tests take those comparisons with a grain of salt. But there looks to be a different noise handling between the two cameras. The A99 is a bit more aggressive while the Nikon seems to retain a tiny bit more of detail. What are your thoughts?

MX now shipping the Canon EOS to E-mount adapter (the one with AF support)

[shoplink 15031 ebay]

The makers of the Canon EOS to E-mount adapter with full AF and Aperture support contacted me to tell me that they just started to sell the adapter through their own [shoplink 15031 ebay]direct eBay Store (Click here to see the auction[/shoplink]). I found it very important to have adapters like that. It will make it easier for many current Canon owners to jump into the Sony NEX world.

And as I told you before the MXcamera will also make a fully AF and aperture supported Contax G and Nikon G adapter! Coming in early 2013!

Here is the video to show how it works:

P.S.: The smart Mag Filters for the RX100 are now in Stock in large quantity at Amazon (Click here).

(SR4) Zeiss lenses for NEX to be released in April!

Share

As you know back in September Zeiss announced that they will release three new NEX lenses in mid 2013 (Source: Zeiss.)! All priced at around 1.000 Euro and with full electronic support (yep AF too!). And as you know the first three lenses are the 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/2.8. Zeiss also said that “Zoom lenses are an option that is still being considered“.

Now some of our sources had a talk with Zeiss representatives. And the unofficial goal for Zeiss is to launch these lenses in April 2013! Same rumor has been posted by Patrick from FujiRumors (the lenses will be available for the X system too). Finally some new high quality glass like the superb [shoplink 8450]Zeiss 24mm f/1.8[/shoplink]!

Back in September I asked you which lens you would buy. This were the results (If you haven’t voted yet than do it to see the results):

The patent describes those five FE zooms. Which one would you consider to buy?

P.S.: The lenses are designed to cover the APS-C circle and not the for FF NEX cameras like the [shoplink 14178]Sony NEX-VG900[/shoplink].

SAR readers mails:
Bart:Since today I am the happy owner of the NEX-6 with 16-50 powerzoom. I love the combination, the Phase-AF really speeds things up. One thing I did find out is that like Olympus and Panasonic, Sony also decided to let distortion correction in the lens go and just apply software corrections to fix it.  When you take pictures at 16 mm you don’t see the distortion in the viewfinder or afterwards on the camera. But when you import the RAW files into Lightroom you see a huge distortion and high vignetting. Some examples of the difference between the RAW and JPEG files can be found here: http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_message/39181572#39181572 It’s in Dutch but I don’t think that’s a big problem.”
