The VG-900. The first E-mount FF

Two trusted sources confirmed that Sony is working on a Full Frame NEX-7 alike system. And they said the camera prototype is almost “ready”. But the real issue is the lens system. They told me that Sony has not enough resources yet to design and produce lenses for a new Full Frame mirrorless system. Currently the priorities are those:
1) Develop and produce new E-mount lenses for the current cameras
2) Develop and produce (and redesign some of the existing) A-mount lenses

The sources said that for that reason we don’t have to expect a new FF mirrorless lens system to be ready before the very end of 2013! But nothing has been decided yet. The priority for the first half of 2013 are the new A and E-mount lenses plus the new NEX-7 update and new SLT cameras.

A litte more info: Expect these lenses to be larger than current known FF lenses like the [shoplink 15173 ebay]Leica M (here on eBay)[/shoplink] or [shoplink 15174 ebay]Zeiss ZM lenses (here on eBay)[/shoplink]. Lens design for digital sensors requires a bit a different approach than the design for film cameras (for example AF parts have to be included).

Just a note. Zeiss made many FF ZM lenses and quite some of them would be interesting for a new Sony FF mirrorless system:

New Sony NEX-6 reviews (and a teardown).

Share

Good Morning!
Let’s start the new week talking about the Sony NEX-6. There are many new reviews to check out! On top you can watch the Sony NEX-6 teardown and Infrared conversion video. I would not try to emulate him :) The full tutorial can also be read on their website ir-photo.net.

ePhotozine posted the full chart test pictures while the dutch Pixelmania (translation here) posted the full NEX-6 review and gets recommended by the reviewer team. There is also a camera test with the 16-50mm pancake lens test at Lesnumeriques (translation here). And also German reviewers are testing the Sony NEX-6 like at Chip.de (translation here). Now four Sony cameras are on the top 5 list at Chip.de. French readers may be happy to learn about the Sony deal described at Lemondedelaphoto.

The NEX-6 is shipping almost everywhere (but not in US) and click those direct links to check out price and in Stock status: Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, Wex UK, Wex Germany Sonystore DEUKFRITESNLSEFICH and more links at Alphacameradeals.

Plenty of auctions are available on eBay (here on Slidoo).

A99 tested for sportphotography at Focus Numerique.

Sony A99 used my NG photographer Yamashita.

Focus Numerique (translation here) tested the sport-photography skills of the new Sony A99.In very short they found they where positively surprised by the AF and Video performance while the JPG quality above 3200 ISO may be a bit disappointing. They also didn’t not find an improvement on the A)9 EVF over the A77 although some readers do say quite the opposite like here at dpreview forum.

For the record, the A99 battery grip is now in Stock in Asia (here on Slidoo eBay). I guess it will arrive soon in EU and US too!

A99 in Stock status check at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, Jessops, Wex UK, Wex Germany, Sonystore DEUKFRITESNLSEFICH and more links at Alphacameradeals.

New A99 review. VG900 in Stock at BHphoto.

Today we have the two new FF cameras in Stock. The A99 at Amazon (Click here) and now even the new VG900 at BHphoto (Click here).

And there is a new A99 review at Whatdigitalcamera. And although the camera earns a relatively high overall score of 89% they have some complaints: “All of these issues mean the A99 ends up being a camera likely to be as embraced as it is disliked. Should the camera’s operational speed be remedied by a firmware update it will no doubt hold more appeal. As it is, it stands as a camera which delivers in some areas with aplomb, but falls down elsewhere where it matters.

At that point I have to say some kind words in favour of the A99. It really all depends from what you need. Pro Photographer Frank Doorhof wrote a very nice article about the A99 that really brings it to the point. The A99 has features that clearly differentiates it from the Nikon and Canon FF models. If those features are important for you than the A99 is absolutely the way to go! There is no camera that will help you to become a better photographer. There are only cameras that will suite you better for the needs you have.

More A99 bits: Rodkar is having a lot of fun with his new A99 and tested it a long list of A-mount lenses. Some more tests on vimeo, A99 vs A900 on dp forum.
