Early Amazon (and SAR) preorder stats: Most preordered camera is the A7r.

Obviously we don’t have real preorder sales info yet. But at least Amazon in some way shows us what’s hot and what’s not. And According to their overall mirrorless ranking (Click here to see) the Sony A7r is the most preordered of the two new Full Frame cameras. It’s followed by the A7 body and on third place we have the A7 with lens kit option. Have to say that I actually expected the kit version to sell more than the A7 body only. Anyway, looks like the Megapixel factor is still very important. UPDATED: I checked SonyAlphaRumors outgoing links and the A7r got 30% more clicks than the A7 and A7kit sum.

The A7r is also the second most sold overall camera at Amazon (ranking here) and the Zeiss 35mm lens sells more than the other FE lenses when you look at the lens ranking (click here).

Still, these rankings not telling us anything about the popularity of the cameras. We have to see if the A7-A7r will be still be within the top list the next coming weeks. My bet is they will remain there for a long time :)

First full Sony A7 review!

Photoreview Australia (Click here) is the first website posting a full Sony A7 review (Preorders: Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, SonystoreUS). This is what they write about the Image Quality:

Images shot with the sample camera and Zeiss Sonnar T FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA lens, contained an impressive amount of detail and showed accurate colour reproduction with well-managed saturation in the default camera settings. These subjective assessments were confirmed by Imatest testing, which showed the camera to be capable of meeting and even exceeding expectations for the sensor’s resolution across a wide range of sensitivity settings.

The conclusion:

We feel the new Sony cameras present a challenge to other camera manufacturers to take a different approach and bring some excitement (and competition) to the middle and upper ends of the interchangeable-lens camera line-ups. We’d like to see some innovative products emerging from the Canon and Nikon stables…Olympus and Panasonic will likely feel the hot breath of competition on their backs. It will be interesting to see which directions they follow, whether towards full-frame CSCs or further innovations and improvements to their M4/3 products. Whatever happens, this appears to be the beginning of a great time for digital photographers.

The video on top has been posted by Oscar and shows the AF performance of the A7 with the Zeiss 55mm lens. Quite snappy and fast! Better than I actually expected. Would have been nice to see how big the difference is between the A/ (with Phase detection) and A7r (with contrast AF only).

And Sony answered many of your questions at blog.sony.com. These are some of the most important answers:
1) Asked about the Minolta 7000 and A7 design similarities they answer: “There is a bit of a retro design in this camera which was purposeful”
2) About A-mount future: “Sony Alpha owners can rest assured that we fully support the A-mount system of cameras and lenses”
3) About the NEX-7 successor: “The α7 and α7R Full Frame cameras represent a new level of performance for the E-mount system and are therefore not direct successors to NEX-7.”
4) “Our new model naming prefix strives to unify the model names.  “ILC” indicates “Interchangeable Lens Camera” followed by an indicator of A-mount “A” or E-mount “E”.”

Exclusive: First Sony A7r RAW files for download!

Until now we only saw A7r JEPG samples on the web. But I guess most future A7r owners are eagerly waiting to see RAW file samples. I am glad to report that SAR is the first site where you can get them! You can download them here at Wetransfer (408 MB). Feel free to create download mirrors so that we can all download them faster! You can open the images on Sony Image data converter (here for win and here for mac). The images have been taken with the 28-70mm Sony kit lens.

One A-mount camera coming in 2014 that will replace both A77 and A99 cameras?

On top you can see an official Sony powerpoint presentation image that shows a “Hidden” new A-mount camera. It looks like Sony’s next A-mount camera will replace both, the current [shoplink 8461]Sony A77[/shoplink] and [shoplink 14165]Sony A99[/shoplink] cameras. I got a couple of info about that camera from SAR readers that attended the various Sony A7-A7r events. I am double checking the info with my sources. Will post some info about that camera soon! Rumor work never ends :)

First Zeiss FE 35mm f/2.8 review!

This is the first review of an FE lens. The Australian guys from Photoreview (Click here) published the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 FE review:

“The review lens proved capable of exceeding the resolution expectations of the sensor in the Sony ILC-a7 camera we tested it with. Slight edge softening could be seen in shots taken at the widest apertures. For many subjects, this feature is desirable as it leads the viewer’s eye towards the centre of the frame. Lateral chromatic aberration was consistently negilg8ible at all aperture settings as shown in the graph of our Imatest results, below. The red lien marks the border between ‘negligible’ and ‘low’ CA.”
