Diglloyd: “Photographers Ask Sony to Address the A7R Shutter Vibration Issue”

Share

Diglloyd launched a new call for action for Sony to acknowledge and eventually solve or mitigate (if possible) the A7r Shutter Vibration Issue. This is the original text written by Lloyd Chambers:

Prelude: The following is expressed with a constructive intent: for Sony to take the issue seriously. The “public” request is merely that: acknowledging the issue is necessarily the first step to addressing it. In no way are the signatories implying any legal implications, rather, we simply all hope to see the issue addressed in a satisfactory manner, a sentiment that the first paragraph captures. There is a big win/win possible here; that’s up to Sony to make it happen.

The Sony A7R represents a seminal technical achievement in image quality in a compact and portable package, a development which we applaud. And yet, we are also frustrated by the shutter vibration issue:

1. The Sony A7R shutter vibration issue causes loss of image quality (blur) in shooting. This loss varies, but can be quantified as reducing image resolution to as low as the 12-18-24 megapixel range (or even lower), varying depending on the lens, lens focal length, lens support, tripod stability under varying field conditions, and the shutter speeds involved. Most affected are telephoto lenses and close range (macro) shooting, but the issue is not confined to those areas.

2. We ask that Sony publicly acknowledge the issue as real, and to publicly acknowledge the issue as a current limitation of the camera.

3. We ask Sony to issue a public statement on what *if any* action Sony intends to take to mitigate or eliminate the issue, and on what timeline.

4. We ask Sony to investigate ways to mitigate or eliminate the vibration, including firmware updates implementing a “shutter delay mode”, or ideally, solutions such as an electronic first curtain shutter (EFC) which would eliminate the issue entirely.

5. As professional or serious amateur photographers, we expect a major vendor to stand behind the products it sells, and to detail and to respond to the issues in a forthright and honest manner.

In support and agreement:

Obviously SonyAlphaRumors editor Andrea fully supports this request. Thanks Lloyd and all Photographers for launching that call for action!

(SR5) NEX-6/7 successor to cost 800 Euro. Shipping in April.

Share

In early February Sony will announce the new High End APS-C E-mount camera. This one camera will replace both, the [shoplink 14167 ebay]NEX-6[/shoplink] and shoplink 8454 ebay]NEX-7[/shoplink] models. I have been told the camera body only costs around 800 Euro. The camera is said to have a much faster AF, faster imaging processor and improved Image Quality and EVF. It will be in Stock for April.

The cameras coming after it are the A-mount cameras (April?). What I am still not sure about are the releases of new RX FF and Full Frame E-mount cameras. I got info about these two cameras but I am trying to check when this stuff will be announced.

Sony A7 gets Dpreviewed (Silver Award)

Share

Dpreview (Click here) posted the full Sony A7 review. The camera earned the Silver award. The reason why it didn’t earn the maximum Gold Award is:

While it has done a remarkable job creating these two cameras, we feel that some refinements are necessary in order to make them more competitive with the likes of the Canon EOS 6D and Nikon D610.
The areas that need the most improvement are related to JPEG image quality. While we recognize that some a7 shooters will be using Raw exclusively, those who are shooting JPEGs will see smudged details and strange artifacts, which are amplified if you edit and re-save them. Regardless of the file format you’re using, the Auto ISO feature needs to be more intelligent, to avoid blurry photos due to the camera’s love for the 1/60 sec shutter speed. Startup time, buffer clearing, and battery life were also a bit disappointing. We’re hoping that a firmware upgrade can address at least some of these issues.

Yes, the A7-A7r are not perfect camera. But they are a game changing news in the photo market. And as a personal note, I own the A7r. And for the kind of photography I do these are amazing tools!

Two Tamron 150-600mm VC reviews.

Share

The new Tamron superzoom got tested at Lensrentals and ePhotozine..

Lensrentals writes:

It’s pretty obvious that the Tamron has both 600mm range and the lowest price. These tests, and everything I see from photographers using the lens in the field, support that it’s of at least equal image quality. Some people will prefer the extra wide range of the Sigma, others the lighter weight of the Canon. But for a lot of people, the Tamron is going to be the best bang for the buck.

ePhotozine writes:

With this lens, Tamron have created something that offers more reach at the telephoto end than equivalent lenses, whilst still being able to deliver good sharpness for a reasonable price. The launch price of £949 makes this lens pretty much the only option for photographers looking for a 600mm lens for under £1000.

The lens can be preordered at BHphoto (Click here).

Hasselblad and Sony. The beginnning of a new medium format strategy. (Poll: Would you buy a low end medium format camera?).

Share

So, the rumors we posted were right and Sony is indeed entering the medium format world by producing CMOS sensor for Hasselblad. Obviously, the soon to be announced H5D-50C is expected to cost $1000 per million pixel which means…about $50,000 just like the model it replaces, the H5D-50 model (here at BHphoto).

But as I have been told by my Hasselblad sources there are other very interesting aspects to know:

1) Hasselblad and Sony are working on quite revolutionary new sensor tech that will fit in future medium format sensors. And some of this tech will spread to the lower “Full Frame” sensor market. (This comes via one of my good sources).

2) It has been not decided yet but it’s a possibility: Hasselblad and Sony could also launch “cheap” medium format cameras to seriously compete in Nikon’s and Canon’s High End Full Frame market. Pentax already did this with the [shoplink 24095 ebay]Pentax 645D (around $6000 or 6000 Euro here one Bay)[/shoplink].

Point 1) is almost certain to happen while 2) is just speculation. But I am curious to see how many of you would be interested to get this:

Do you feel Sony has to make a sort of EOS-R5 8K camera too?
