Sony RX1RII Camera Review by Mark Galer

Share

Almost 10 years ago Sony announced the Rx1RII fixed-lens full frame camera. Mark Galer tested the camera to see if it still made sense to spend money on it. What amazes me is that it is still available for $3298 at BHphoto. A hefty price for a 10-year-old digital camera, don’t you think? Probably means that they are still selling decent amount of Rx1RII cameras!

If after watching the review you want to buy one…consider to save $900 on the reconditioned Sony RX1rII sold by Amazon (Click here). You still get 90 days warranty!

DPReview Reader’s Choice Awards 2024: Sony 28-70mm GM is one of the Products of the Year

Share

Here are the results of the DPreview readers awards. The top 3 best products are:

  1. Nikon Z6III
  2. Canon R5II
  3. Sony 28-70mm GM

My take on the single products:

1) The Nikon Z6III (Amazon, B&H Photo, Adorama) has the speed to beat the Sony A7IV, but the latter has better image quality (more resolution, a much wider dynamic range) and world-class autofocus. The soon the be announced Sony A7V needs to catch up in speed to beat the Nikon.

2) The Canon R5II (Amazon, B&H Photo, Adorama) is a hit. I like it and I think Sony should be worried about this camera model. It’s the one reason why I think Sony might anticipate the A7rVI launch to end 2025 (instead of 2026).

3) The Sony 28-70mm GM (Amazon, B&H Photo, Adorama)  is a stunner. It proves once again that Sony is a leader in optical design technology. It is a pound lighter than the Canon and still optically superior. What more can you ask for? Ah yes… now I want a 70-150mm f/2.0 GM :)

Overall I would have put the Canon in first place and the Sony lens just behind. In third place I would not have chosen the Nikon…. but the FujiFilm X-M5. I know I am an anomaly here :)

What would have been your top three?

Sony a7R IIIA marked as “discontinued” by BHphoto

Share

This camera was announced in 2021 and the only “improvement” over the A7rIII was the addition of a new, higher-resolution LCD screen (2.36 million dots). And now it has been officially discontinued according to BHphoto. If we are lucky, there will be a new A7rVI at the end of 2025 and the older A7rV and A7rIV cameras will continue to fall in price. This could mean the end of the A7r

Wild rumors roundup: A7sIV, A7rVI and FX cameras

Share

About those rumors: I have no idea who sent them and 90% of the times they turn out to be wrong. But, it happened in the past that a couple of those were right. So I will post them today, and we all together can eventually keep track of this. If one of the sources turns out to be right than we will know we can trust it a bit more!

Source 1:

7SIV in the hands of select filmmakers
Now the siv is a true hybrid camera
Sony will not recycle the 12.2 mpx bsi sensor
Amazing times ahead..

Source 2:

According to information from a SONY employee, SONY will officially say goodbye to the FX9 series in 2025. Therefore, an FX9 successor is not expected. The FX6 will also ‘probably’ not receive a Mark II in 2025.

Source 3:

Sony A7RVI will come in 2026 on “new generation” platform: new sensor and new processor

So that’s what I got the past weeks from anonymous messengers. So definitely high chance most of this (or all) could be wrong. I hope Source 2 is definitely wrong :)
