Comeptition: Canon R1 will not be launched before end 2024…barely before the new Sony A1II

Share

As expected, all those rumors were totally unfounded. The Canon R1 is not coming any time soon!

I told you previously to not trust all those specs you read on the web, and I told you my trusted sources did not get ANYTHING about a possible Canon R1 release any time soon. Latest rumors do now say that we will get first a new R5II in late Spring and the R1 sometimes after that.

What does this mean for Sony?
With the upcoming major A1 firmware update and the fact that Canon is late with the R1, Sony doesn’t have to rush with the release of the A1II. Like I told you before at best we are getting the A1II in November….but my bet is on an early 2025 announcement.

Canon USA claims to be the number one in the mirrorless segment….Sony says nope…we are number one!

Share

PetaPixel reports about a funny marketing battle between Canon and Sony. Lats week Canon USA claimed to be the number 1 in the mirrorless world. But Sony gave PetaPixel a call and told them this:

“This year, Sony received numerous #1 claims from the Circana/NPD agency, as we do every year,” Sony tells PetaPixel.

As noted, Sony cites Circana/NPD (it’s one company that used to go by just NPD), a private firm that tracks sales and sells that information to manufacturers. Canon’s data also comes from Circana. According to the data it received, Sony says it was number one in several categories last year, but says two are worth pointing out:

  • Sony was the #1 full-frame mirrorless camera brand in 2023 (both dollars and units)
  • Sony a7IV was the #1 full-frame camera in 2023 (both dollars and units).

My two cent: Maybe both are right. Canon is slightly ahead in the mirrorless world when it comes to APS-C+FF cameras while Sony is leading in the FF world?

Crazy! Sigma will announce a new 15mm f/1.4 diagonal fisheye lens!

Share

Damn what a surprise! Around February 21 (day varies according to timezone) Sigma will announce two new lenses:

  • 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports
  • 15mm F1.4 DG DN DIAGONAL FISHEYE| Art

And that 15mm f/1.4 is a never seen before kind of lens. Nobody ever made such a fast Full Frame Fisheye lens before. The only lenses coming close are the Olympus 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye PRO (it’s a MFT lens so FF equivalence is 16mm f/3.6) and the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens. Having a f/1.4 fisheye lens will likely open some new possibilities never explored before. Bold move Sigma! But I wonder how big this lens will be! I bet it’s going to be massive! I hope trusted sources can soon share some images and full specs of this lens.

Circular vs Diagonal Fisheye:
The circular fisheye effect gives a 180-degree angle of view across the whole periphery.
A diagonal fisheye effect captures a roughly 180-degree diagonal angle-of-view and a greatly distorted view of the image periphery. This effect is also known as a “full-frame fisheye” effect because the resulting image covers the entire frame.

Reminder: Sigma 500mm f/5.6 specs:

  • Lightweight lens…less than 1,5kg and so the lightest telephoto prime lens you can buy.
  • Very fast AF on Sony A1 (lens has linear motor)
  • The lens sharper than the Sony 200-600 G
  • very low chromatic aberration
  • Coming for Sony E and Leica L mount cameras
  • Price just under $3,000
  • Announcement on February 21.
