Sony’s new a7S II fixes the biggest problems with the original a7S. Is it worth the extra cost, or should you buy an a7R II instead? (Tony Northup on SonyAlphaCameras)
Interview at IBC from Victor Bart.

Amateurphotographer writes:

The A7S II looks like a fantastic camera that buckles the trend for cameras with increasingly high resolutions, and that is what many photographers have been asking for. They don’t want more and more pixels, they want a higher dynamic range and less noise.
The real test will come when we have a full working sample of the camera and can see exactly what the differences in image quality are between the two cameras. For videographers there is certainly a reason for the new camera, whilst professional wedding and event photographers will surely make a beeline towards the A7S II and its quieter shutter, faster focusing and image stabilisation.

Digitalcameraworld writes:

The ability to record 4K in-camera allows these users a bit more freedom plus the ability to travel lighter and work more discretely. Meanwhile the improvement in the AF and noise control will be widely appreciated.
Those looking for an ‘all-rounder’ camera are best off looking at the A7 II, or even the A7R II if they can stomach the cost, but the A7S and A7S II are intended to produce the best image quality.
The A7S really impressed when we tested it and the improvements brought by the A7S II should make it even more attractive.

Open question on 14 Bit RAW: Is it “uncompressed” or “lossless-compressed”?

Share

Note: The Sony A7sII now got listed at Amazon US too (Click here)!!!

Yesterday Sony announced that it will add 14 Bit RAW recording on the A7sII, A7rII and yet not defined “additional cameras”. There is one uncertainty highlighted by Diglloyd:

I am puzzled why an uncompressed format would be offered versus a lossless-compressedformat. The core issue is file QUALITY, not file FORMAT. Lossless-compressed is identical to uncompressed in quality, but saves a lot of space.

  1. An “uncompressed” A7rII file would creat 74MB per file (75% larger than the current Sony 11-7 Bit compression).
  2. An “lossless-compressed” would create files that are almost one-third less big than the uncompressed version

Some more open questions:
1) Will Sony add the feature on A-mount cameras , first generation A7 cameras and on the A6000 too?
2) What will be the effect on the buffer memory?
3) Will it (and by how much) slow down operations (playback and so on).

Let’s hope Sony will answer those questions soon…

Source was right: Europen Sony Online store closed (SR4) A6xxx replaces both NEX-7 and A6000.

Share

sonyuk

Two days ago a trusted source said the European Sony Online stores would close at midnight. And indeed all stores have been removed! Just check Sony DEUK, FR, IT, ES, NL, BE, CH, AT, SE, FI, NO, PT.

So now that the trusted source was completely right on that rumor I will also share what he wrote about the A6xxx back in late August:

There is still probably the NEX7 replacement to come in the next month although I heard it will be also the A6000 replacement.

and in a second mail he added:

As far as I know it is due to be announced in September but you know how things change around here!

So, this should hopefully be the right info and finally the real release. That A6xxx rumor hunted us all year! The camera was first due in April-May and that was even confimed by the official Sony leaked roadmap (Wikileaks scandal). It than got delayed because of sever overheating issues and after that managment has decided to focus on the A7rII and A7sII release first.

Evan Knight:I used my new RX100 mk. IV to capture some HFR video while making coffee this morning. I love this camera! Best RX100 iteration yet! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC_InSQHv7g

Brad:Thought I share this shot with you. Recently switched from Nikon to Sony. This was taken with the A7II along with the 90mm macro that just came out. There are some others posted on the site as well. https://www.facebook.com/photosbybradclawson.

Luke:Just got my hands on the newest Came-Tv Mini-2 3-Axis gimbal. After spending about an hour assembling the stand and balancing it, I took the Mini-2 to the streets of Boise, Idaho to give it a try during the local farmers market. I am pretty happy with the results, but I do think it takes a little practice to get the hang of it. I used my A7s and Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 with the Mini-2 and shot for about 30 minutes straight before my arms gave up. https://vimeo.com/135152360
