First Image Quality comparison between the Fuji GFX (Sony 50MP sensor) and the Sony A7rII

Share

A7rII vs GFX ISO 100 comparison at 100% enlargement (Click on the image to see the orioginal size).

I guess you were all curios to see if the 1.7 times larger Sony 50MP sensor of the Fuji GFX can easily beat the Sony A7rII image quality. Well now you can use the Imaging Resource Comparometer to make all the comparison you want as they just added the GFX Lab shots. Imaging Resource writes:

“This camera produces the best lab shots we’ve ever come across. Detail is fantastic, and high ISO performance is excellent.”

Here are a couple of short links to some of the full size images:
100 ISO: GFX vs A7rII
1600 ISO: GFX vs A7rII

It really comes down to very personal professional needs if the GFX advantage justifies the very high price of the camera. If you ask me I would like Sony to make a medium format camera with 55x41mm sensor. I think the image quality difference with FF would be really make a huge difference. But so would be the price :)

Here is the 100% enlarged 100 ISO comparison with the Phase One XF100 that uses the 55x41mm Sony 100 megapixel sensor (Click on image to see full size version):

Sony interview at Imaging Resource: Says wide angle FE lenses are priority

Share

Imaging Resource interviewed Yasuyuki Nagata and Takashi Kondo from Sony. Most of the talk is about the new Sony 100mm STF lens. But Imaging Resource also tried to squeeze out some info about the future Sony lens strategy. They didn’t get much:

  1. About a new wide angle zoom: “There are a lot of professionals that [are asking for] a telephoto or wide-zoom [lens], but at this moment, maybe most of our professionals are basically [shooting] portraits.
  2. About future lens development: “I cannot comment about future development products, but honestly speaking the landscape photographer is increasing [in Sony’s customer base].
  3. APS-C people want a longer lens? “That’s why we’ve established the new 18-110mm f/4 lens to record movies.

Summa Summarum: Wide angle lenses are high on the priority list because more and more landscape photographers are using Sony’s high-resolution cameras. While APS-C E-mount cameras need zooms and video optimized lenses.

New $40 fisheye E-mount lens from a chinese company

Share

Our reader YC just spotted a new teaser for a Fisheye MFT lens made by a chinese manufacturer:

Some info from a Chinese mirrorless forum:
 http://tieba.baidu.com/p/5004916064?pid=104825892670&cid=104826339998#104826339998
This guy claimed that his little team from Shenzhen, China is designing a super compact fisheye macro lens for E/X/M43 mount. The length is only 6mm. On APS-C it’s a 180 diagonal fisheye. The aperture is F8 and you cannot stop down. The minimum working distance is only 1 cm. It contains 1 AA glass. The corner sharpness wouldn’t be worse than the other fisheye lenses on the market (at least he said so).
They have finished the first prototype. Several samples are included in the thread. The price is 299 CNY = 43.44 USD. They’ll start a fund raising program from March on the Chinese website JD.com (kind of like Amazon). The early bird price is 249 CNY = 36.18 USD. The product is planned to be shipped from June. But I guess they don’t have any plan for oversea market yet.
