70-200mm GM review by Phillip Reeve.

Chuck:Yesterday (9/16/17) I photographed my first Division 1 College Football Game at West Virginia University. The attached photo is WVU WR # 2 Ka’Raun White catching a 28 yd TD Pass from QB Will Grier at 10:45 in the 2nd Qtr.
My camera settings: 1/2500s, f/5.6, 100mm, ISO 500
I shot the entire game with my Sony A9 and the 100-400 G Master Lens.  I also used the 24-70 GM and the 12-24 G lenses to capture other environmental elements in order to tell the whole story of the day.
It was an awesome experience!

Images of the modified A7 Full Frame E-mount camera without EVF!

Share

A Chinese member of the Xitek forum shared these pictures of his Full Frame E-mount camera wihtout EVF. He modified the Sony A7 by removing the EVF on top of the camera. It now has become a sort of Full Frame a6500 camera. The forum members clearly liked his “creation” and maybe Sony should really consider to make such a camera.

Click on these pictures to see how he modified the camera:

Just a reminder: Sony actually once patented a FF compact camera without the top EVF:

First full review of the new Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 FE lens: “excellent image at a pleasingly wallet-friendly price”

Share

The lens is now in stock at Amazon (Click here).

We have the first full review of the new Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 FE lens via Photographyblog. The only real downside of this lens is purple-fringing at f/1.2. But that’s not a major issue if you take time to correct this in post. But this is really the only “cons” of this lens:

The 40mm f1.2 Nokton Aspherical is another sharp, well-built and compact standard prime lens from Voigtlander that offers an addictively fast, if somewhat tricky to use, maximum aperture of f/1.2. Combined with the 10-blade aperture and a 35mm full-frame Sony camera, with a certain amount of patience it’s possible to create some beautiful bokeh effects. The manual focusing experience is once again top-class and the clicked/de-clicked aperture ring is a great touch.
In summary, the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 Nokton Aspherical offers a compelling bland of compact size, excellent image quality and sheer speed, all at a pleasingly wallet-friendly price.

This is a “home run” lens from Voigtlander. Personally the only thing that holds me back is the 40mm focal length. I would have preferred it to be a tack wider. And maybe some of you would have preferred it to be a tack closer.

UPDATE: Marc Alhadeff just posted his 40mm FE review:

Overall the Voigtländer 40mm F1.2 is a very nice lens with a unique character , however as I was not as impressed as the stellar  Voigltänder 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar. The lens is not for everyone, you will need to be patient and practice to be able to get decent manual focus at F1.2

Speculating about the possible A7sIII specs

Share

On October 18 (+1 or -1 day) Sony will announce a new camera. Of that I am 1000% sure. And the chances are good that this might be the new A7sIII. All we know from a reliable source is that it has the same A9 PDAF. All the rest is speculation for now.

Dominik Kutrowski from our Sony A7sIII facebook group shared this:

I was on a sony alpha day this weekend. Some employees from Sony were present. One of them told me, that there are rumors about a Sony a9s, that combines the low light caps of the Sony a7s II with the incredible sensor of the Sony a9. There could be also features like 4k60p and a complete new gamma profile. He said that he can’t confirm that properly, but that it’s very possible.

If Dominik info is correct (which we obviously cannot take for granted) this sounds like an A9 camera trimmed for video. If true I hope Sony improved the A9: For example real advanced touchscreen features, two FAST SD card slots, articulating screen and so on.

Anyway, that’s just speculation. What are you hoping to see on the new A7sIII?

(SR4) UPDATED: Sony A7sIII (or A9s). Is it a Full Frame GH5 killer?

Share

Just a rendering of the possible A9s (but it could be named A7sIII)

UPDATE: Sony teased an “exciting camera launch” but we now learned this is for a new camcorder and not an new A7sIII.

Original rumor before the update:

The chances are increasing that we will get a new A7sIII (or A9s). This is the info I just got from three sources:

Source 1 (this was the source whom told me correctly there would be a new RX camera on September 12):

“I heard a7s will have pdaf like the a9”

Source 2 (the source who shared correct announcement date of Sept 12 but was mistaken on the two camera announcement. But he was right many times before):

“After last RX announcement I am not 100% sure about anything, but I am pretty sure that video camera will be first like you wrote today. a9s or a7s3. And that is the surprise I wrote about before last announcement (because your other sources claimed it will be a7 III). Both are in plans but like I said – video camera should be first, a7 III will rather be announced in Q1 2018. And yes, it will be Full Frame GH5 killer!”

Source 3 wrote:

“Sony will announce ILCE7S3 at media in action NAB show.”

I hope to get a few specifics the upcoming hours. But I think we finally know what the “surprise camera” is that we rumored back in September and wasn’t announced along the RX10IV. Join our A7sIII group to further discuss news on this camera:
facebook.com/groups/SonyA7sIII/

I have no info if the new 135mm and 400mm FE lenses will be announced at the same event or maybe on another press event in November. Still a bit disappointed to hear the a7III is shipping in Q1. But it seems Sony decided to use their marketing and production resources to go after the Panasonic GH5 first.

Rumor ranking:
I am 100% sure Sony will announce one camera at or around October 18
I am 75% sure this is a new FF E-mount camera and 75% sure this is the A7sIII (or A9s)
