A new teaser from Zeiss shows the first images of the new Zeiss E-mount Full Frame Otus lenses!

Share

Zeiss just published the first teaser video where you can see bits of a new lens that will be announced on February 25. What we learn from this teaser:

  1. It’s E-mount
It clearly shows a lens mounted on a Sony camera (I think it’s this camera). So now we know for sure it’s going to be
  2. Aperture at least f/1.7 (more likely f/1.4?)
In one of the screenshots, I increased the light intensity to recognize the f/1.7 aperture mark. So it will definitely be f/1.7… but maybe even faster as you can’t see the full aperture range in the video.
  3. It’s OTUS
It has exactly the same yellow markings as the original OTUS DSLR lens series. So I assume it is a newly developed OTUS series, perhaps with manual focus like the original series. This series aims to achieve the highest possible image quality. The price of the DSLR series was over $4,000.
  4. Relatively Compact
Unlike the DLSR series the lens looks decently compact.

It is also clear to me from the video that these are manual focus lenses. Here are some pictures of the few interesting parts in the video. Let me know if you can spot anything else interesting!

Zeiss will announce a new OTUS E-mount lens series on February 25

Share

Zeiss posted a second teaser for an announcement happening on February 25. Like I told you last week I am near certain we are getting a newly designed OTUS series for Full Frame mirrorless system cameras. This will include certainly the E-mount :)

The original OTUS series for DSLR cameras had four lenses:

It is possible that Zeiss will keep the same basic specifications but make the lenses much more compact.

More info (and great feedback!) on the upcoming new Sony 16mm f/1.8 G lens

This is a new info about the Sony 16mm f/1.8

It’s an Amazing lens, impressive image quality for a G lens.
Lighter than the 20mm and 5mm shorter than the 20mm, so it’s really small and light weight.
Coma could have been better and if you a Astro nerd corners could have been a bit better,
but in general it’s super impressive for its size and weight.

This lens is offered at a price of 999 euros and in my opinion could be a real bestseller!

Rumor recap: On February 26 at 3pm London time Sony will announce these two new lenses:

Epic news folks! Zeiss is back and will launch new E-mount lenses at the Cp+ show!!!

ZEISS IS BACK!!!!

Six years ago, Zeiss announced the last ‘photo-orientated’ lens…it was this massive $4,000 masterpiece. After that, Zeiss only produced industrial, film and smartphone lenses. Launch of new E-mount focus lenses in the Batis and Loxia series was also discontinued.

BUT!!!

Yesterday Zeiss posted this official teaser on Instagram:

The picture was taken with the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 and is already a strong indication of the introduction of a new photo lens.

And today a source told me this:

Half a year ago, a guy I know who works for Zeiss in PR (and was also involved in marketing for the unfortunately failed ZX1) told me Zeiss is bringing out new lenses in a few months. Now if you look at zeiss imaging on instagram they are teasing something with an owl, so I guess it might be something Otus line related. May guess is an Otus line for mirrorless cameras as E-Mount and the like.

What will Zeiss announce at the CP+ show?

I don’t have 100% proof yet, but my guess is that Zeiss will indeed announce a new series of Otus lenses for full-frame mirrorless systems. The ‘Otus’ brand stands for the premium line of Zeiss lenses that offer the maximum image quality achievable. My speculations are:

  • These lenses will be more compact than the original Godzilla sized Otus lenses
  • They will be available for sure for Sony E-mount, but maybe also for the Nikon Z and Canon RF system
  • The original Otus lenses were manual focus only… I’m not sure if they will add autofocus this time.
  • They might keep the same core specs of the original lenses: 28mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, 100mm f/1.4
  • Get ready to sell your kidney because I have a feeling these lenses are going to be expensive!

My take:

It is very good news for the entire industry that Zeiss is back! Such a name has too much history to have disappeared from the photographic market forever. It also means that the company now sees the market as ‘safe’ enough to develop and launch new lenses without the risk of failing to sell. I also think that introducing a new ‘Otus’ range makes more sense than introducing new, more affordable Milvus, Batis, Loxia and Touit lenses. Highest quality is what we expect from Zeiss and enough people will be willing to pay the high price to get the typical Zeiss look. What do you think about it? What do you hope to get? And is your kidney ready to say goodbye to you? :)
