Unexpected: Sony US lowers the price of the newly announced RX100VA

The new RX100VA just got a $100 discount at Adorama and BHphoto. I can only think of one reason why this newly announced camera got a price drop…poor sales?

Sony “serious” answer to Canon and Nikon’s new FF mirrorless will follow soon after their announcement

Share

Image of the new Nikon FF mirrorless

On August 23 Nikon will launch the new Z6 and Z7 camera along an impressive 58mm f/0,95 lens (full specs here). And Canon is rumored ot announce their FF mirrorless on September 4/5 (info here).

In these days had an informal chat with people close to Sony. They have been told by Sony managers that Sony is not “unprepared” by Canon and Nikon’s FF mirrorless launch. I guess with not unprepared they mean they more or less know what kind of specs those cameras will have.

And they also said Sony has new tech and the necessary resources to outperform both systems. They told me to “expect a serious answer after the Canon/Nikon announcements

Of course Nikon and Canon folks can argue that this might be only some bullish manager talk. But somehow I got the feeling that in this case Sony is telling the truth. Canon and Nikon surely can make cameras with better ergonomy. But Sony is learning fast and after all they have the leading tech when it comes to sensor quality and other electronic parts (like the new 5.6 million dots EVF).

It would be nice to get a new stunning Sony A7sIII right after the Canon and Nikon announcements. Something that will “out-wow” them :)

Sean Tucker: Why I made the Big Switch to Sony

Share

Sean Tucker:

I recently made a total switch in my gear from Canon/Fujifilm to Sony. This video gives my reasoning and why the Sony system is best for my needs as a travelling hybrid shooter. I also give my thoughts on how we should be choosing gear in general, avoiding brand loyalty, gear snobbishness etc, and dispassionately choosing the right tool for the job.

Dvir:My name is Dvir Barkay and I am a professional nature photographer. I have been a Sony user since the Alpha 100 and still use my Sony A77 for travel but my predominant gear is now a Canon 1Dx and Canon 200-400 lens. I recently did a review of the Sony A9 camera, which I really loved and I really feel Sony has finally caught up to Canon and Nikon (at least in most respects) in regards to the focusing capabilities which on every Sony camera I used before it felt as though it was not up to par for the sort of work that I do. I thought the review would be of interest to your readers. You can find a link to the page with all the photos taken with the Sony camera below along with a link to the review.

Bloomberg: Sony’s New Super-Fast Cameras are Winning Over the Pros

Share

Bloomberg reports that Nikon and Canon face a threat at the top end of the market by Sony.

At stake is a market worth $3.2 billion a year. Although it’s a niche industry with just a fraction of total camera (and smartphone) sales, Canon, Nikon and Sony benefit from the branding (and sales) boost that comes with being the main suppliers of high-end cameras and lenses for sports, news and the arts. “Sony is now in a position to try and grab more market share,” said Kazunori Ito, an analyst at Morningstar Investment Services.

“The a9 is really revolutionary,” said Michael Kooren, a news agency photographer who switched to Sony Alphas after shooting with Canon for 26 years.

“The hurdle for Sony is still high,” said Tomonori Igari, an editor at Asahi Camera. “It depends on how much they commit to creating a support structure, and also on Nikon and Canon’s mirrorless strategy.”

Bloomberg also talked with Hiroyuki Matsushita from Sony:

Some pros say Sony hasn’t rolled out new lenses fast enough, and have complained that customer support has lagged behind Canon and Nikon. Sony is working to improve both, according to Hiroyuki Matsushita, the manager overseeing product planning at Sony’s cameras division. “We were aware from the beginning that this would be for pros,” he said.
