BCN reports the Sony A7III sells more than the competition combined (Canon R, Canon RP and Nikon Z6)

Share

BCN collected the March-April japanese sales shares of the top five entry level Full Frame cameras. It aggregates POS data of home electronics retailers and EC shops across the country (around 40% of entire country sales). The data shows something very unexpected: Yes the Canon EOS-RP had a good sales start in the week of March 11. But sales quickly dropped.

Currently the three competition cameras from Canon (RP+R) and Nikon (Z6) all together sell less than the amount of the A7III…WOW!

Of course this is representative for the Japanese market only but the trend seems to be confirmed by the (non scientific) Amazon US Best Sellers ranking where the A7III scores much better than the competition.

Thanks Frank!

Note: I corrected a mistake in the A7III vs competition percentage Sorry!

Sony a6400 review at Dpreview: “unprecedentedly capable camera for its price point”

Share

Dpreview just published the full Sony a6400 review. The camera earned the Gold Award and this is what the DP team writes:

Senior Editor Barney Britton says:

The story of the a6400 is really all about the autofocus system. With a high-quality lens attached, the a6400 is a dream camera for casual portraiture. I don’t love the ergonomics, but when you hardly have to fiddle with any buttons to get the shot, these sorts of handling frustrations matter much less.

Science Editor Rishi Sanyal says:

The a6400 is an unprecedentedly capable camera for its price point. Parents, enthusiasts and pros alike will appreciate the class-leading pro-grade AF system that’s also simple enough to use you can just ‘set and forget’. Image quality is up there with the best. Detailed 4K video and easy tap-to-track autofocus makes for a compelling run-and-gun video camera, though you’ll want to stick to stabilized lenses. To sum up: the a6400 truly impresses and is arguably more capable than many cameras at far higher price points. My only concern is its usability: I often find myself using it more as a point-and-shoot, although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Sigma confirms first natively designed Full Frame lenses for mirrorless will be announced within 2019

Share

Sigma CEO Yamaki had a chat with Imaging Resource. And he made it very clear that “brand-new lens designed for the short flange-back system should be available some time this year.” What’s also clear from this interview is that these lenses will be designed for the 20mm flange distance of the L-mount and than simply modified to fit the flange distance of Sony E-mount too

Few more info:

About the Sigma FE lens sales:
…”Surprisingly good. They like the optical performance of those lenses. It’s better than I expected. But there also are some people waiting for the lens design for the short flange-back, so we are also working on it

Market is shrinking.
Yamaki believes the market will shrink further: “Maybe [down] 20 to 25% from now, that’s my guess.

DSLR vs Mirrorless:
…”the market is changing from DSLR to mirrorless much quicker than I thought.“…..”Eventually, I think the majority of interchangeable-lens cameras will be mirrorless.
