Great news: Sony now registered a total of two new cameras in Asia: Sony A7V and another E-mount camera coming between March and June?

What you see above is the official registration line in Indonesia for a new digital camera from Sony. The camera is manufactured in Thailand and has the code “WW277226”. There are no other details that we can learn from this document. In total, Sony has now registered two new camera codes, one in China and one in Thailand. Let’s take a look at the details:

1) Camera WW773396
On December 4, the Chinese authority officially registered a new Sony camera with the code “WW773396“. It has dual-band WiFi support, which means it is definitely not a cheap entry-level compact camera. It usually takes 3-4 months for the camera to be officially launched. So we should see this camera announced in early April at the latest. My bet is that it is the new Sony A7V.

2) Camera WW277226
On January 20, the Indonesian authority registered the camera “WW277226”, which is manufactured in Thailand. The fact that it is made in Thailand rules out the possibility that it is a camcorder, as these are made in Shanghai. So it could be another E-mount camera! I have received a “hint” from a source as to what kind of camera it might be, but I’m not 100% sure yet, so I’d rather wait to share any information until I get further confirmation.

By and large, the two registrations confirm what I have previously told you through my trusted sources: That we will get more camera announcements in 2025 than in 2024 (Sony A1II and ZV-E10II). Here is the image of the first registration in China:

So folks, I told you that in February we might get a new lens, in March maybe the A7V and after that another E-mount camera!

Sony could announce a new 50-105mm f/2.8 G lens at the CP+ show?

The CP+ trade fair starts on February 27. Last year, Sony announced the 24-50mm f/2.8 G on February 21, just before the show. And it looks like we might get another lens this year as well. According to a NEW source, we will get the FE 50-105mm F2.8 G lens at the end of February.

This is not a rumor confirmed by trusted sources, so take it with a grain of salt. But according to the source, this lens will be a continuation of the 16-25 and 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens series. That means it will be compact and very lightweight.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that this information does NOT yet come from my trusted sources. It’s unlikely that the Sony A7V will be announced at the C+ show, as Sony traditionally prefers to announce its big new cameras outside of such events to enjoy the full spotlight. An announcement in March is therefore much more likely.

A new lens from Sony will probably be announced shortly before the start of the CP+ show

Image of a woman holding a magnificent 20-300mm f/1.8 GM transparent lens :)

From the information I have gathered, it seems that Sony will announce a new lens in February before the SP+ trade show. I am working to get confirmation on the lens specifications. Some rumors have previously pointed out the possibility of an update to this lens, but I actually believe it will be a completely new piece of glass!
As for new camera launches, the bet is that the Sony A7V will be the first camera coming in 2025–most likely in March, since Sony likes to announce big news at such trade shows. No word yet on possible specifications, but I’m crossing my fingers that the camera will use Sony’s new 44MP and 20fps sensor. That would be a killer cam, don’t you think?

Wild rumors roundup: A7sIV, A7rVI and FX cameras

About those rumors: I have no idea who sent them and 90% of the times they turn out to be wrong. But, it happened in the past that a couple of those were right. So I will post them today, and we all together can eventually keep track of this. If one of the sources turns out to be right than we will know we can trust it a bit more!

Source 1:

7SIV in the hands of select filmmakers
Now the siv is a true hybrid camera
Sony will not recycle the 12.2 mpx bsi sensor
Amazing times ahead..

Source 2:

According to information from a SONY employee, SONY will officially say goodbye to the FX9 series in 2025. Therefore, an FX9 successor is not expected. The FX6 will also ‘probably’ not receive a Mark II in 2025.

Source 3:

Sony A7RVI will come in 2026 on “new generation” platform: new sensor and new processor

So that’s what I got the past weeks from anonymous messengers. So definitely high chance most of this (or all) could be wrong. I hope Source 2 is definitely wrong :)

Dpreview’s wishlist for 2025: A7V, A6100, RX100VIII, RX1rIIII and 50-150mm f/2.8 lens

Dpreview discussed areas where Sony could improve and expand its camera lineup to better compete with Canon and Nikon, covering both updates to existing models and new products:

  1. High-Resolution, High-Performance Camera: Sony lacks a versatile, high-resolution camera at a more affordable price point. The a7R V offers high resolution, and the a7S III excels at video, but only the a1 II combines both features at a premium $6,500 price aimed at professionals. If Sony could remove some professional features and lower the price, it would have a camera to compete with the Canon EOS R5 II and Nikon Z8, both offering similar capabilities at a much lower cost.
  2. Update for the a6100: The a6100, launched in 2019, is due for a refresh. Since Sony has improved its autofocus and menu systems, updating the entry-level APS-C model could provide better value and performance for less than the a6700.
  3. Update for the a7 IV: The a7 IV features a 33MP sensor, but it suffers from high rolling shutter in 4K video. A potential update could either lower the resolution or integrate partial stacking technology (like the Z6III) to improve performance without compromising dynamic range. An update to the a7 V could be expected soon.
  4. Compact Camera Updates: Sony is encouraged to release a new model in the RX100 lineup, either a more affordable version with a non-stacked sensor or a higher-end version with advanced features and the fast 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens from the RX100 V. The RX1 also deserves an update, potentially using a modern full-frame sensor (from the a7CR) and Sony’s latest autofocus technology, with improved battery life.
  5. New Lens Wish: The article suggests a new 50-150mm F2.8 lens, an APS-C equivalent to the full-frame 70-200mm, which would be smaller, lighter, and more affordable. This lens could be beneficial for all APS-C systems, and Sony is seen as the likely candidate to produce such a lens due to its commitment to innovative and unique lenses.

In conclusion, Sony could enhance its lineup by creating a more affordable high-resolution hybrid camera, updating the a6100 and a7 IV, refreshing the RX100 and RX1 series, and introducing a versatile 50-150mm F2.8 lens for APS-C cameras. Do you agree with this wishlist?

I personally think a the lens wishlist is way too short…would love to get the 50mm f/0,95 AF FE GM, 85mm f/1.2 GM and 70-150mm f/2.0 GM. When it comes to cameras we really do need a new A7sIV and a A7000 flagship APS-C camera.

First possible 400mm GM II lens specs

A new soruce shared the possible specs of the rumored 400mm f/2.8 GM II. Just to be clear, this is not a rumor I got from trusted sources so be skeptical on this one until I can confirm or deny it:

Sony is going to make an announcement this Winter of the 400GMII lens in advancement of the 2025 NFL season & 2026 Winter Olympics.
It will have a drop-in 1.4x TC like the new Nikon 400mm 2.8, and with advances in materials it will weigh 100 grams less even with the built in TC.
Less busy Bokeh, and Quad XD-Liner motors for more accurate AF-C hit rate on erratic subjects.
Lens will be fully unveiled in May 2025, with shipping before the NFL 2025 season.

What do you think about those rumored updates?
