Here is a new leaked image of the upcoming Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM II (SEL85F14GM2). The image was leaked by Mike on Reddit. Sony will announce the lens on August 28 at 3 p.m. London time. It will be a bit smaller and lighter than the old 85mm GM. It can be seen that it uses a new ALC-SH180 lens hood.
Compared to the old lens, the new version has a new location for the customization button, a new IRIS lock and aperture marks that are now under the aperture ring. Image quality is said to be much improved over its seven-year-old predecessor.
I am 99% sure that no other new Alpha lenses or cameras will be announced on August 28. Sony’s next announcement should follow in early September, before the start of the IBC trade show.
Many readers sent me questions about the next SUPER BUSY Sony announcements. So I have decided to setup this livestream where you can ask me ANYTHING. Main topic will be:
Sony August 28 announcement
Sony FX and 24-70mm 2.0 September announcement
Sony Alpha camera announcement in October/November
Next week, on August 28 around 3 p.m. London time, Sony will announce the new 85 mm f/1.4 GM II lens. Unfortunately, I have not received any information about other products that will be announced that day. But don’t worry, there are many new products coming in September/October/November!
First fact: On June 4 Sony registered the camera with the code “WW751104“. So this means that in September/October we are for sure getting a new model:
According to my sources, we will first have a new FX E-mount camera, then the 24-70mm f/2.0 GM, and finally a new Alpha E-mount. But there is definitely more to come than the products I mentioned now ;)
One of our readers (thanks!) noticed this at minute 8:00: Matt from North Borders states that he will be in Taiwan in a few weeks to test new Sony cameras. It seems a bit odd for him to reveal this if he is under NDA. I don’t think also he is talking about the August 28 Sony event because there we should only get the 85mm f/1.4 GM II.
I am not sure about his claim, so far I have only heard about the announcement of a new FX camera that will probably take place in September. Hopefully, he will give us more details soon to clarify what he meant by this statement….
Two trusted sources have told me that DJI may announce something big in September. They themselves don’t know exactly what to expect, but they have a feeling that it could be some sort of new mirrorless product that will compete more directly against Sony/Canon/Nikon.
I trust these sources, so I think DJI may indeed have something new in store. But we still don’t know WHAT to expect. It could be a new full-frame mirrorless camera, a new video-focused camera, or some kind of fixed-lens full-frame model…we just don’t know yet.
Now, I personally love the idea of a new full-frame camera for mirrorless systems from DJI. I like it so much that I even created a tentative website called dji-rumors.com. If the rumor turns out to be wrong, I will kill the website, while if it is true I will put all the rumors and news I get on this new website.
The reason why I would like DJI to join the mirrorless world are the following:
It would break the monopoly of the Japanese mirrorless “culture” that has the same “conservative” idea of hardware/software.
DJI might finally do what Canon/Sony/Nikon have not done: Easy and intuitive cameras for normal humans to use, with built-in connectivity for sharing content on social networks, support for APPs, and so on!
In general, this may bring some excitement within the whole market so that overall sales will increase.
Lie I told you before, I am NOT certain there will be really a new DJI mirrorless system coming in September. But let me know in the comments system what your thoughts are about this!
A source just told me that Sony plans to announce a new updated version of the current 400mm f/2.8 GM lens. Apparently the aim is to make it better than the competition like the Nikon 400mm 2.8. The lens was announce back in 2018 so an update is certainly possible to happen in 2025.
