Next set of WILD Sony A7V specs

I have already told you that my reliable sources seem to indicate that the A7V will be on the market only in 2025. They have not yet shared any possible specifications. All I am getting are specifications from other new or anonymous sources. Here I share one of them, but of course keep in mind that it could be completely wrong. That said, let me know if a camera like this might be of interest to you:

  • Alpha 7 Mark V is a 36 megapixels camera with a comparatively slight low-pass filter. The actual resolution of the photos is significantly higher than the Alpha 7 Mark VI.
  • It features Generation II suite of BIONZ XR Processor x AI Processing Unit which supported fast 120fps AE/AF, dynamic attitude- and rate-based object tracking on a slow BSI sensor.
  • The screen performance is great, with drastically improved brightness, contrast, and color gamut.
  • But the 10fps burst shooting is a little behind all the competition.
  • The excessive yet insufficient UHD8K resolution causes it to record only oversampled 4K video. And full-frame 4K/60p video requires a 1.2x crop.

Like I told you, not an info from my trusted sources and I am highly skeptical about those specs…

HOT: Sigma will soon announce a new “intriguing” FF zoom!

Last week I told you that Tamron will soon announce another big zoom lens. Well, two trusted sources have just told me that Sigma will also soon announce a big zoom lens!I have been told that unlike the recent Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art lens this is more “intriguing” for the masses as it’s NOT a niche lens but an affordable lens that could be interesting for most of our readers.

Will have details soon!

One of my sources claims the Sony A7V is NOT coming by end of 2024. It will be announced in 2025 only!

One of my trusted sources is sure that Sony will not announce a new Sony A7V this year. According to him, the A7IV will definitely arrive in 2025.

I have yet to double and triple check this rumor, but this source has been right many times in the past, so I am inclined to believe him. Unless he is wrong this time and unless Sony decides to change the roadmap at the last minute, I think we should not expect to have the A7V this year.

Probably Sony thinks the now nearly three old A7IV still holds up well against the new Nikon Z6III and the two year old Canon R6II. A spec comparison can be found on that BHphoto page:

We know from reliable stats that the A7IV still sells well in Japan. And also the Amazon US mirrorless ranking, the Amazon DE mirrorless ranking and the Amazon UK mirrorless ranking always show the A7IV among the top sellers. So I guess Sony is right to wait for a more mature timing. Moreover Canon is rumored to announce a new R6III in late 2024 and Sony might prefer to see what this camera will look like.

I hope the source can soon come back with some more precise release time info and possibly even some specs. In the mean time let me know in the comment system what you expect from the A7V. And this is the poll:

Select the three most important improvements you hope to get on the new Sony A7V:

Surprise: Tamron will soon announce a new BIG zoom lens!

Reliable leaked How2Fly just tweeted that Tamron will soon announce a new BIG zoom lens! I have no idea yet about th possible specs but we can guess based on patents:

Now, in my opinion that 200-800mm f/5.6 lens would be a stunner! Don’t you agree?

Japanese Youtuber shares the first possible 24-70mm f/2.0 GM lens specs

In early 2024 I told you that Sony plans to announce a new GM 24-70 mm f/2.0 lens. This information was provided to me by two reliable sources, so I am confident that the rumors will prove to be correct. The sources told me that the lens will probably be announced after the launch of the ZV-E10II and the 85mm GMII (coming soon). What is special about this lens is that:

  • It’s the world’s first 24-70mm lens with constant f/2.0 aperture
  • It’s still going to be lighter and more compact than the Canon 28-70mm f/2.0 lens

Now, a Japanese youtuber claims to know some specifications of the lens. I have no idea whether we can trust him as a source or not, so take this information with great skepticism. He writes:

  • Lens weight is just 1145g
  • extensive use of special lightweight material
  • no built-in optical image stabilization
  • excellent vignetting and aberration control
  • price could be around $3000

For comparison, the weight of the current Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GMII lens is 695 g, while that of the Canon 28-70mm f/2.0 lens is 1430 g. So the Sony would weigh 285 g less than the Canon despite having 4mm more at the wider end. As I told you, I do not know if this Youtuber is sharing correct info, but I am sure that Sony has the capabilities to achieve such an impressive reduction in weight and size. So let’s hope the info turns out to be right!

If those would be really the 24-70mm f/2.0 GM specs...would you consider to buy the lens?

Leaked Canon R1 specs? How does it compare to the Sony A9III?

Within a couple of hourse Canon will announce their new R1 flagship model. I was wondering if this camera would compete against the Sony A1 model but it doens’t seem to be the case. One of my readers spotted this Canon R1 spec sheet on Canon China. The page was only up for few minutes and he shared me the screenshots. I used the google image translation tool and those are the specs. WARNING: We don’t know if those are the final specs yet…or if Canon China made a mess!

Canon R1 (here at BHphoto):

  • 24MP sensor
  • Digic X + Digic accelerator
  • ISO 100-102.400
  • Full dual core pixel AF
  • 12fps mechanical and 40fps electronic shutter
  • 6k Raw 60p, 4k DCI 120p, 2k DCI 240p
  • in built stabilization
  • autonomy is 700 shots
  • WLAN-Bluetooth
  • 2 CFexpress Type B slots
  • Size 157,6 x 149,5 x 87,3mm
  • 920g

Again take this list with a grain of salt as Canon China page may was only a “work in progess”. But if the specs are correct, this is definitely a competitor to the Sony A9III, but it is no playing in the same league of the Sony A1 and Nikon Z9. The real advantage of the Canon seems to be high ISO performance and body usability. While the A9III will remain the fastest camera and will have the unique advantages of the global shutter (no jello effect, no banding, flash sync crazy).

UPDATE: Another Chinese youtuber claimed ot have seen EXIF data of the R1. In that case the R1 seems to have a new 64MP sensor that would actually make it a totally completely different kind of camera

As you see rumored go from hero to zero and back from zero to hero :)

Thanks Bruce!
