The need for speed: Kowa 55mm f/1.0 on the Sony NEX

[shoplink 4575][/shoplink]

We are all waiting for Sony to release some new fast primes for our NEX camera. Meanwhile we have to look for third party lenses that can satisfy our need for speed. I found that lens on eBay: Kowa 55mm f/1.0 ([shoplink 4575]Click here to see the Kowa eBay auctions[/shoplink]). That lens has been modified to fit on your NEX camera without any adapter! Of course it’s manual focus only. It’s soft wide open but might you like that creamy effect.

To see some image samples visit the [shoplink 4575]eBay dealers product page[/shoplink]. They have some images to show. If you tested that lens on your NEX let us see some of your images!

Thanks!

DxOmark weird results. Pentax K-5 beats the Sony A55 (and the Canon 5DmarkII)

So now I am really to start to be worried about their DxOmark results. They just published the Pentax K-5 sensor test and the K-5 easily beats the [shoplink 3617]Sony A55[/shoplink]. What’s so crazy about that? The K-5 and the A55 do feature the same Sony 16 megapixel sensor! How the hell did they manage it to have a 1,6 stop advantage over the A55? And is it possible that a full-frame camera like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II isn’t better than the K-5?

I understand that the imaging processor are different but I don’t know if that alone can explain the huge gap!

The Sony A55 has the best APS-C sensor (says DxOmark)

DxOmark tested the 14 Megapixel (A33) and 16 Megapixels (A55) sensor and surprise surprise…the A55 has the best APS-C sensor ever tested on DxO. Look at the following sensor ranking graph: http://dxomark.com/index.php/en/Camera-Sensor/Sensor-rankings.
It beats all Canon APS-C cameras and only the Nikon D90 is as good as the A55.

The real fun with DxoMark tests is that you can easily compare the cameras like here for example: A55 vs D90 vs 7D (click here to see the comparison).

Nat Geo shooter Ben Horton compares Canon glass to Zeiss glass (Zeiss rules!)

Ben Horton finally gave us an answer to the BIG question: Are Zeiss lenses better than Canon lenses? Oh yes! The National geographic shooter tested the Zeiss ZE lens series for Canon and published the results on Photocinenews. He tested those lenses and said the Zeiss lenses can outresolve the 22 Megapixel sensor of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

When presented with an opportunity to take a good photo, I chose the Zeiss lens over my Canon lens every time. I didn’t even have to think about it. The contrast, the clarity, and the feel of the lenses was so much better from the very beginning that I had ceased to use them just for the review, I was using them so I would get the best image that I possibly could.

Why is the test so important? It shows the potential of the future High-resolution APS-C and FF Sony sensors when combined with Zeiss lenses. The A77 will feature a new 24 megapixel sensor and the FF sensor is expected to have more than 30 Megapixels! To have good lenses is crucial because otherwise the Megapixel race doesn’t make any sense.

The top mirrorless camera comparison

The graph above shows the google search trend of current mirrorlesss cameras. The [shoplink 3003]Sony NEX-5[/shoplink] is the most popular camera. But Sony is not popular because of the NEX system. Last few days many different reviewers tested different Sony cameras and they liked the tested products!

These are all opinions from independent websites. Now let’s hope Sony will continue the taken path!

Steve Huff is a very known camera reviewer. He is not a Sony freak and doesn’t get paid by anyone to write reviews. He just posted a long Nikon D3100 review. If you click on that link to read the review scroll down until you reach the very end of the page. He ends the conclusion with: “(The Nikon D3100) just did not blow me away. I prefer the Sony A33 and A55” :)
