Sony NEX-5n AF speed improvement test with new firmware. NEX-7 in Stock status.

Our reader David (Thanks!) made this very interesting AF speed comparison between the [shoplink 8452]NEX-5n[/shoplink] 1.01 and 1.00 firmware. He tested the speed on both 18-55mm and 16mm lenses and as you can see the speed improvement is significant!

The firmware is available here at Sony UK (or select another country). The NEX-5n here at [shopcountry 8452].

Good news! The NEX-7 body and the kit version with the 18-55mm black lens are now in Stock in any stores. Here is a selection:

Metabones Canon to NEX adpater tested by EosHD.

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Metabones would release a new Canon to NEX adapter that has electronic aperture control and Image Stabilization support. The estimate launch date for the adapter was January 21st but because of the high demand there is not a single of them in Stock at Conurus.com. At least our friend Andrew from EosHD (Click here) could get his hands on one of them and tested it on the NEX-7. I am not going to unveil you all his findings but I like that phrase he wrote: “The adapter works as you’d expect with no lag, and OIS works fine. It really is like having a Canon mirrorless camera.

So dear Canon readers, why stress Canon to make a mirrorless camera when you can have it now thanks to that adapter? :)

P.S.: The Metabones adapter costs you $399. If you don’t need the AF and IS working than get the very cheap [shoplink 11174 ebay]Canon to NEX adapters on eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].

Sony NEX-5n review at Mansurovs (Click here): “While it is not comparable to a DSLR in terms of features, autofocus, speed and versatility, it certainly is comparable to some of the best APS-C DSLRs in terms of image quality.

Also Reghardware (Click here) tested the NEX-5n: “this revamped NEX model is very much the business, improving on its predecessor in sensible and efficient ways“.

Sony NEX 55-210mm F/4.5-6.3 OSS review at KurtMunger (Click here): “At the short end, the centers and mid-sections are sharp at all apertures, although the corners remain a little soft even stopped down.  Moving to 100mm, I see basically the same thing, mid-sections good, corners a little soft.  At the long end, I see a pretty sharp frame all the way from the center to the extreme corners, that’s pretty good performance for this type of lens.

Lots of Sony 50mm for NEX reviews!

[shoplink 8448]

[/shoplink]I particularly like cheap and good quality lenses. And the [shoplink 8448]Sony 50mm f/1.8[/shoplink] for NEX is certainly one of them. Too bad it’s not available in black as the silver color really doesn’t look nice on my [shoplink 8454]Sony NEX-7[/shoplink]. Anyway, here are a couple of test you have to read if you are currently considering to buy the lens:

Joseph Eckert (Click here) posted a new 5mm for NEX lens test: “The price is pretty good for a lens with this large an aperture, and combined with decent sharpness this can make a good portrait lens. But make sure you know exactly why you are buying this, otherwise it might end up sitting around in your bag.

Also 3D-Kraft (Click here) is busy testing the lens. And actually he compared the lens with the 10 times more expensive Leica Summilux: “you still see an advantage for the (10 times more expensive) Summilux, which has about half a stop wider aperture and is able to render a perfectly creamy bokeh. But the E 1.8/50 OSS can make some points with autofocus and optical stabilization which helps a lot in more agile situations.

And the Flemish website Nexblog (Click here to read the google translation) compared the 50mm F/1.8 E-mount vs. Minolta 50mm F/1.4 RS ([shoplink 11596 ebay]Click here to see the Minolta lens on eBay[/shoplink]).

One more thing: Readers from USA, Canada and Germany sent me emails to say that the lens is currently shipping in their countries. Here is the list of shops (click on names) I usually check to see when it’s in Stock. Good Luck!

New NEX reviews…

Sony Zeiss 24mm for NEX review

Andrew Reid posted his final NEX-7 video quality review at EosHD (Click here): “Faced with the 5D Mark II and Panasonic GH2, the NEX 7 is a better stills camera than the GH2, ergonomically superior to both for video, has great colour and tonality in the standard picture profiles, but is not up there in terms of resolution and compression.”

NEX-7 and Zeiss lens test at SonyAlphaLab (Click here):”next to my Canon L Glass it’s the best lens I’ve used on the Sony Nex cameras.  Corner to corner sharpness is very well maintained considering the engineering challenges of the E-mount 18mm flange distance to the sensor.

Sony 50mm for NEX and Sony DT 16-50mm reviews.

[shoplink 8457][/shoplink]
David from Photoclubalpha (Click here) published the full Sony DT 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM review: “I do not agree with some of the over-the-top reviews including one to be found on the Sony store USA site claiming it’s the best zoom of this range and aperture for any system. It is not, you get more than you pay for (much less than a lens of this specification might cost from others) but not an optical miracle.”  16-50mm price check at [shopcountry 8457].

The Sony 50mm for NEX has been tested by ThePhoBlographer (Click here): “Of all the lenses I’ve tested so far, it by far has the best image quality for the system. The fact that I was able to use it for a professional product shoot also blew my mind away. Generally, I leave all of that to my 5D Mk II but the fact that I did it with this little camera makes me thrilled for the mirrorless future.

In USA the lens will ship on Feb 25th at BHphoto (Click here). Check these links to see if other stores will ship it soon: [shopcountry 8448].
