Diglloyd: “A7rII lack of shutter vibration leads to superb results! A compelling reason to abbandon DSLR.”

Note: A7rII is in Stock and shipping worldwide at Digitalrev.

3D-Kraft posted that Sony A7rIi vs A7s High ISO comparison (video on top):

The image from the A7RII shows some more detail due to its downscaling from a 15 MP sensor readout. At 25600 ISO there is a slight advantage for the A7S. Regarding noise, the A7RII is not far behind the A7S but the A7S is able to keep up more details at very high ISO.

Diglloyd posted an article about the Shutter Vibration with the Electronic First Curtain Shutter on the A7rII:

The lack of shutter vibration possible with an EFC shutter means that any ultra high performance but physicall awkward or large lens like Zeiss Otus or even long teles like the Leica 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R can be shot with superb results and no fear of damage to sharpness by shutter vibration. (and Again on a second article): This is serious value from the IBIS technology and two compelling reasons that some shooters are best off abandoning the DSLR.

High ISO A7rII comparison at Newshooter:

From the outset, it is clear that the full frame mode on the a7RII isn’t as good as the a7S. The image is quite noisy and doesn’t compare well to the a7S. At all ISOs from 3200 onwards the a7S bests it and I would not use the a7R II this way.

The A7rII issues post (autofocus problems, long expsoure chroma noise and again pre-cooked RAW).

Bildschirmfoto 2015-08-07 um 22.37.48

On August 12th there will be a special A7rII live streaming at BHphoto (all info can be read here). Also Sony manager Kenta Honjo will be part of the panel and this may be the occasion to also discuss the A7rII “flaws”. Because as with any new cameras you will have issues and bugs. Some of them can be fixed by Sony via firmware update and some not. Here is the “A7rII issues” roundup:

Autofocus: Marko on Dpreview writes:

Today I got the new A7RII. Everything is very good. But I have one Problem with the SEL2470Z. When I focus with the camera AF-S (Focus-Field is green), everything from 35 to 70 mm has massive front focus and the object which should be in focus is blurry. This is heavier when I use F5.6 to F7.1 or higher and not so heavy in F4.0.
All other lenses work great !
Manuel Focus on the SEL2470Z works fine !
I don’t know, if this a Problem of the lens or a Problem of the new camera. I tried my old A7R and here everything is fine. When I use AF-C on the new AFRII I often got good focus, but not everytime. Can someone try this with the new A7RII and the SEL2470Z ?  Should I send the lens to Sony for repair ? Or is it the new camera ? Thanks for helping !

RAW: Diglloyd says the A7rII Raw Files Are Still ‘Cooked’:

While I can double or quadruple sharpening on a Nikon D810 file with minimal ill effects, doing so on a Sony A7R or A7R II files looks godawful.
I have to be very careful with sharpening Sony A7R II files, just as I had to with Sony A7R and A7 II and A7 files. The raw files are pre-cooked. Very disappointing to see this practice continue with the A7R II, which has superb sensor quality.

Front focus issues: Marko on Dpreview writes:

Autofocus jitter: Bphoto writes on SonyAlphaForum:

Picked up new camera and my first lens (switched systems entirely today), the zeiss 55. Now I’ve noticed the lens is still using firmware v.1 and I don’t have my computer with me to try updating to v.2.
That said, I’m using P mode with afs and wide focus settings, and I’ll focus on something (accurately) as usual right? Then after I release the half-pressed shutter button, focus should (on af single) remain on target, but it jitters and loses focus intermittently and kinda jumps around.

chroma_noiseA7rII

Long expsoure chroma noise: Again Bphoto writes on SonyAlphaForum:

I had read about these Chinese tests and a few others indicating poor performance by the new camera with long exposures. This concerns me as I do a bit of nighttime astro and landscape stuff. I wanted to check it out before getting to bed so here’s a couple RAW crops showing what I think is chroma noise in shadows. You can see my adjustments on the right. I haven’t really seen such noise before. Not sure what’s causing this, but I hope it’s something that can and will be addressed via firmware. I never had anything like this with my Nikon. The JPEG versions, i’ll note, are so compressed that banding happens far sooner than would have on the Nikon /:

Long exposure affects dynamic range: Anonymous:

http://forum.xitek.com/thread-1485077-2-1-2.html. Here some chinese users in the largest chinese camera gear forum, were discussing the noise issue with long exposure. They are not blindly accusing Sony in the chinese scene. You can see a lot of comparison pictures of A7rII A7S D800 D800E D810 D810A(which is specialized in long exposure) 5DSR. Can the raw decoding softwares include Rawdigger, exiftool, Capture One Pro(Sony recommends), RawTherapee. Also, they are referring to a similar test JimKasson @dpreviewforum was doing. You can download the raw files if you look for links in this currently two-page post.
Conclusion: A7rII did perform worst (worst dynamic range, most noisy) of all cameras tested here, in terms of long exposure, no matter it’s low iso (100, for normal landspace) or high iso (3200 6400, for astronomical photography).

This is a long list o issues I hope Sony will tackle down. And while we are hear…please Sony also improve your service! If you want to become successful you have to give us great hardware (which yo do) great software (give us “real” RAW) and offer decent service (in some countries you really don’t do a decent job here).

Feel free to add your issue description on our SonyAlphaForum.

Debunking A7rII myths? No real improvement on M-mount lenses. Image quality on par with the usual cams (D810 and so).

The first wave of enthusiastic A7rII reviews is over. Now let’s jump into more detailed testing made by two famous reviewers:

1) Sensor performance on par with other cameras:
On the video above Tony Northup compared the new Sony A7rII vs the 5DS-R, D810, GH4, a7 II & a7S. In his testings the A7rII doesn’t show any Dynamic Range or resolution advantage over the Nikon D810 camera. At Low ISO Nikon and Sony are on par with a slight edge in favour of the Nikon because of super clean 64 ISO setting the Sony doesn’t have. But where the A7rII beats the ass out of the competition is the on sensor stabilization. When it comes to Handheld shooting the A7rII clearly is by far the best camera form the bunch!
In Short: On the “pure” image sensor level there is little improvement. But on a “real-world-handheld-shooting” level the A7rII is way better than the competition.

2) No visible improvement with M-mount lenses:
Diglloyd tested M-mount lenses on the A7rII and writes:

The internet is abuzz with claims from those who think that the laws of optics have been repealed for the Sony A7R II, just because it has a new sensor. These claims seem to be based on seeing less color shading, but this has always varied by sensor (magenta with some Sony sensors, green with others). Better neutrality is good, but it’s silly to think this means a whole lot. Sony cannot change the thickness of the sensor cover glass without altering the optical path, and this would wreak havoc on image quality with lenses designed for it.
The sharpness losses outside a small central area are severe, just as expected, very badly blurred/smeared over most of the frame.

As you have seen sometimes reviewers feedback do not match. 3D-Kraft and Bat (leicaboss.com) noticed and improvement on M-mount lenses. Diglloyd is not. This is just a reminder that every review you read is not a 100% perfect fact.

MUST READ! Great A7rII tests by electrical engineer Kasson!

We saw plenty of bloggers and photographers posting their Sony A7rII tests. But it’s time now to get a feedback form a different kind of reviewer. What does electrical engineer Kasson think about the new Sony camera? His principal research area for those six years was color management, color processing for digital photography, and color transformations such as gamut mapping. And these are damn great and must-rad articles you have to click on:

New A7rII news roundup (M-mount test by Nick Frank, Video review by EosHD, Low Light test by Cinema5D)

A7rII_really_right_stuff

Brian sent us that picture to prove the Really Right Stuff L-bracket for A7II also fits the A7R II. Also the Sunwayphoto plate works on the A7rII (here at Amazon). And I guess this means all A7II L-bracket you can find on [shoplink 39200 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink] will work on the new A7rII too.

Nick Frank posted the very first detailed Sony A7r with M-mount lens test. You can download all the files at nickfrank.de. Would like to hear what you think about those images!

Cinema5D tested the video low light quality of the A7rII:

To my opinion, It is safe to work the Sony A7rII (for broadcast purposes) up to ISO 6400 with no problem. You can go higher risking some noise in your footage, but in some occasions it will be more than acceptable.

EosHD posted the first part of his A7rII review:

“The Sony A7R II is a fascinating camera and tons of fun to shoot with. When compared to cream of the crop from last year, the GH4, NX1 and A7S, the A7R II is overall the better all-round camera for both video and stills. Astounding 42MP photos, completely new sensor and internal 4K recording from a full frame sensor, despite heat issues.”

Regarding the Chinese Lab A7rII test:  First of all, it’s a Chinese camera rental/repair agency that did the test in its lab.  The comparisons of dynamic range are actually charted:  Two examples
http://mmbiz.qpic.cn/1
http://mmbiz.qpic.cn/2
with the author conceding a “surprising” advantage for a sony camera over the d810 in terms of higher iso dynamic range performance.  But also noting that in the low iso performance area so key to landscape photographers, d810 is still king.
Of course the main issue is the long exposure color noise in the shadows which starts to appear at shutter speeds greater than 1 second, really become a problem beyond 10 seconds, and is like an unwelcome dose of LSD beyond 30 seconds.  The author demonstrates this by comparing pictures which have been adjusted +ev 5 for exposure and +100 for shadows in the shadow areas with d810, 5dsr, (and later on d800e, a7m2, and canon 6d).  This actually could be a significant issue for landscape lovers

Bart (Ex LeicaBoss.com): “The A7RII is probably now the world’s best M-mount camera.”

My friend and M-mount expert Bart from the now offline site Leica Boss sent me this:

The A7RII is probably now the world’s best M-mount camera. I can report that The [shoplink 39161 ebay]Leica Summicron 35mm f/2[/shoplink] and [shoplink 39162 ebay]Zeiss ZM 18mm f/4[/shoplink] both work beautifully on the A7rII. Both struggled greatly with the original A7 cameras. The corner smearing & color shifts have been all but eliminated.
I had a few moments to test each lens at a demo yesterday – and really the only limitations now are the lenses themselves. The “wide open” shots appear to only show the natural aberrations of the lenses, rather than any sensor-produced issues.
Of curse, these pictures are nothing special – but are well enough to understand that we have a real winner for Leica shooters. Unbelievable! Link to images and post:

I also got an anonymous (and therefore non reliable) info from a Chinese reader which would be quite worrying if true:

hello, a chinese test lab just tested the A7rII sensor today, they use the same method but different standard compare to DXOmark, more reliable and more practical
the dynamic range doesn’t have much improvement, about 0.1EV better than A7r, still around 2/3 stop less than nikon D810, D810 is still the DR king
the real problem is, due to overheating of the BSI and more heats from stabilization system. the DR can go down extremely bad in long exposure.
in a 30s exposure test, the A7rII is even worse than canon 5dsr
so if turn on the camera and turn on stabilization for too long, long exposure, and using too much burst, can all cause serious drop in image quality

But I seriously doubt the info here is correct. Also because the real world image samples we have seen so far are of superb quality.
