Unboxing The Sony Alpha 7Rii, RX100-4, RX10-ii by Gary Fong.

You can now read plenty of A7rII owner reviews at Amazon (Click here scroll down) and BHphoto (Click here). Many readers don’t like the quick overheating of the camera. But I guess you have to live with that if you want to shoot long 4K videos. If that’s an issue for you better get the A7s with external recorder. That said all reviewers really do like the camera!

There is also an upcoming new double A7rII US event:

Really Right Stuff just added A7RII baseplate and ‘L’ plate for preorder.  New feature according to sales person is they have managed to allow for FULL LCD ARTICULATION with the new A7RII baseplate. Also this is a full width plate that surrounds the battery door (with access for battery)….  IMO this is much more comfortable to shoot handheld with the baseplate attached vs. the shorter plates that don’t surround the battery door…
I have the original RRS baseplate for the A7R and it is by far the most solid and best finished plate I’ve seen for the A7R..  It’s more expensive than other brands but worth it for the more solid and robust design and superb finish.  I have one on preorder for my A7RII

Interesting info from Sony at Dpreview: Claims BSI indeed improves performance on third party wide angle lenses.

sony-a7rIIgrey

There is a closer look at the Sony a7R II by Dpreview that unveils a couple of interesting info:

1) Something we think is very interesting is Sony’s claim that, due to the effective increase in lateral space for the active pixel area from going backside-illuminated (BSI), pixels are able to receive more oblique light rays, which helps with issues like extreme vignetting and color shifts at the peripheries of the image.
The current design in the a7R II should allow for high resolution (small pixels) and the ability to accept very oblique light rays – particularly important for legacy glass that has an exit pupil located very close to the sensor. This ability essentially makes the sensors more ‘film like’: film avoided many of these issues by having an essentially flat, 2D structure with very little depth.

2) The faster sensor in the a7R II allows it to reset all 42 million photosites fast at the start of the exposure, meaning the mechanical shutter doesn’t even need to be used at the start of your exposure.

3) So what’s the big deal? Electronic front curtain plus no mirror is the big deal. No moving parts around the sensor means you don’t have to worry about keeping your shutter speeds high to make use of the full potential of all of those pixels. And on top of that, you’ve got in-body image stabilization (IBIS) to stabilize things for you further. And no shutter movement at the beginning of your exposure either, so nothing sudden for the image stabilization system to respond to and make matters worse.

4) Dual-gain implementation like the one found on the a7S exists in the a7R II. This architecture essentially boosts the signal even more, at around ISO 640 on the a7R II (and at 1600 in the a7S), really early on in the signal pathway, to ensure that any noise added by the camera has minimal effect on the (now ‘louder’) signal. This essentially means increased dynamic range at higher ISOs

5) The Sony RAW compression can limit dynamic range: The posterization artifacts are due to Sony’s lossy compression, which you can read more about in Iliah Borg’s excellent study here. You’ll also see in Iliah’s article that this can particularly be an issue with star(trail) shots, which tend to have sharp, high contrast transitions.

6) Sony claims a 40% increase in AF response compared to the original Alpha 7R, in particular because of faster contrast-detect AF, but we actually think this estimate is underselling the capabilities of the a7R II. Considering the accuracy of focal plane AF points, which is far higher than most AF points of DSLRs, the ability of the a7R II to focus quickly and continuously is no small matter.

7) Eye AF is potentially game-changing for wedding photography, newborn photography, and generally photojournalistic and candid photography where you need to react to a subject quickly. Combine this with the focus accuracy of on-sensor AF implementations, and you have a usable way of instantaneously and accurately focusing on the eye of a subject, even at 35mm F2

Really a very interesting contribute from the Dpreview team! And again, a big statement in favour of real lossless 14 bit RAW. I will keep annoying Sony until they will deliver it to us via firmware upgrade :)

New Sony A7rII reviews (Colby Brown, Admiringlight, Imaging Resource, Photoscala).

A7rII_Amazon

The A7rII will now ship within 3-5 weeks according to Amazon US (Click here). And here are brand new reviews and news:

Sony Artisan Colby Brown writes:

Bottom line, The a7R II is easily the best camera Sony has released to date and if I had to choose one Sony body to take with me on any given project…this would be it. Is it “better” than the Nikon D810 or the Canon 5DSR? Maybe. Maybe not. That depends on what your needs are as a photographer. The dynamic range, ISO, AF capabilities and size of the a7R II make it a better fit for me than Canon’s current flagships. The inclusion of internal 4k video, silent shooting and impressive features such as Eye AF and the ability to use 3rd party lenses on occasion makes the a7R II a better fit for me than the D810. While your mileage may vary, I hope that I have included enough information, images and RAW files for you to ultimately come to your own conclusion on whether this is the right camera for you.

Sony A7R II vs. A7 II – Print Test by Admiringlight:

The A7R II is shaping up to be a fantastic camera, but the extra resolution may or may not be of use to you for printing, unless you print very large or really like to get up close to large prints. Where the A7R II’s extra resolution really may come in handy is when cropping. A significant crop will still yield images with greater than 24 MP, and an APS-C crop will yield 18 MP images. This means that even heavily cropped images can be printed quite large and retain a very good look to the image, where the same crop on an A7 II may limit you to, say, a 12×18″ print before the print doesn’t look quite as good. In any case, I think that most shooters, especially those who don’t print larger than around 24 inches wide, should feel good knowing that in most circumstances, the difference in final output is fairly minimal at low ISO. For high ISO, well, that will take more investigation and more time with the camera. Look forward to my full A7R II review later this month.

Reminder: A7rII in Stock and shipping worldwide at Digitalrev. Germans have gold box deals on Sandisk card.

LeButler on SonyAlphaForum posted the lust of pros and cons when using silent shutter mode:

Negatives:
-RAWs reduced to 12 bit (reduces dynamic range, though not noticeable in the majority of shots)
-Dark banding across the image under artificial light at certain shutter speeds (which are unpredictable, can avoid completely changing shutter speed)
-Expanded ISO modes not available
-No flash triggering

Positives:
+Silent
+Reduces shot-taking lag to virtually zero
+Less vibration = potentially sharper shots
+Nice little haptic feedback remains when taking a shot (on A7Rii)
+Presumably uses marginally less battery
+Presumably extends body lifetime
