Curiosity: new Fujifilm GFX100RF vs Sony RX1rII size comparison

GFX100RF vs Sony RX1rII

Fujifilm’s main goal when developing the new GFX100RF was to make it as compact as possible. This is how it compares with the smallest full-frame camera with a fixed lens, the now 10-year-old Sony RX1rII:

So when it comes to the thickness (camera+lens) the Fuji is really close to the Sony. But they has to give up on brightness (lens if f/3.1 in FF terms compared to the f/2.0 Zeiss lens on the Sony). But the camera is wider and much taller.

Fujifilm announced the GFX100RF fixed lens camera and we are still waiting for the new Sony RX1rIII :(

Premium compact cameras with a fixed lens such as the Fujifilm X100VI, the Leica Q3 and the Ricoh GR are currently selling like hot cakes. And today Fujifilm has announced the new GFX100RF medium format fixed lens camera. Full specs, pricing information and pre-orders can be found at BHphoto, Amazon, Adorama, FotoErhardt, Fotokoch, WexUK.

Once again, I’d like to emphasize that Sony really missed out on this momentum. Kudos to Fujifilm for taking the risk of making a fixed lens medium format camera. I’m not sure how well this camera will sell: It lacks IBIS, it has a slow lens (28mm f/3.1 full-frame equivalent), and it’s larger than comparable full-frame fixed-lens cameras like the Sony RX1rII.

I still think that the improvement in image quality of this ‘small’ medium format sensor over full-frame is hardly noticeable in practice. That’s why I hope that when Sony enter the medium format sector, they use the much larger 53x40mm sensor instead:

However, the real highlight of this year for Sony would be the release of a new RX1 camera with an improved menu, battery life and autofocus. It has the same form factor, even the same Zeiss lens and a 61 MP sensor inside. I think that would be a real big seller, don’t you?
