Sony takes the biggest booth at the NAB show

For this years Nab show (April 23 – 27) Sony took the largest spot of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Usually Sony doesn’t really announce new E-mount gear. But you never know…and we still miss the CINE E-mount lens they teased over two years ago:

The Sony A7IV has a “wide aperture close distance Eye-AF front focus issue” that needs to be fixed

A7IV at BHphoto. Amazon. Adorama. FocusCamera. BuyDig.

Peter sent me this message:

It is about the new a7 IV, that has a (by Sony to owners confirmed) wide aperture close distance Eye-AF front focus issue (like frame filling face, or head- and shoulder portraits), which makes the AF to focus on the eye brows or eye lashes only, but not to the pupil – even if the focus frame does mark the pupils perfectly.
The spot-AF with deactivated Eye-AF is not affected, so it seems to be a software issue.
Also many owners did a comparison with their a7 III, a7R III (I did), a7C and even the a7R IV and none of them did show this issue and nailed the pupil in the exact same conditions by mostly 99%, while the a7 IV did miss 50% on good days and typically miss 75-90% and the other 10% have mostly been only acceptable.
Many (including Sony) blamed affected users with user error, DOF and aperture comments. But the funny thing is, that also a pro photographer who was trying to make photos for an eye lashes extensions catalogue had this issue – with aperture F6.3! There have been some more affected pro photographers as well.

Sony denied this issue for a long time but we could make some pressure and still do, which seems to work.
We’ve built a community to share experiences, share serial and case numbers and proves that this is a serious problem, that every owner can point to when opening a case.
Most importantly: We already have 3 confirmations (2 received today, confirmed in Romania, Australia and Germany) from Sony and a reseller with an own Sony rep that could reproduce the issue together with the customer and different Sony lenses.
We’ve made them public and Sony told 2 of these owners that did get the confirmation as well, that there will be a communication on their website soon and a firmware update that will address this issue is on the way.

If you are interested, I can assist you with bringing all sources like the e-mails and also video links together.

Lensvid shares the Sony A7IV “Hidden Feature”

Lensvid writes:

We recently got our A7 IV and playing with the camera and settings things up made us discover a feature that at the moment we think only this camera has which can actually be pretty useful in some situations.

The divider frame is a black frame with a white arrow JPEG file that you can add to your stills shooting folder on your camera (see example below).

So how do you add this? the only way that we could find (and feel free to let us know in the comments if you know of another way of doing this) is to assign this function to a button on the camera.

This is how we did this:

  • Setup>
  • (3) Operation costumize>
  • (A) Custom key/dial set>
  • Choose a key to assign>
  • (Red camera menu) Shooting menu>
  • (8) Selection / memo>
  • Create divider frame

Now each time you press the assigned key (we choose arrow down on the back control wheel but you can choose whatever you want) you create this divider frame.

Bad surprise: The CP+ show has been canceled!

The CP+ organization announced it has canceled the vent due the COVID risk. Online events will still take place. Here is the press text:

CP + 2022 Pacifico Yokohama Venue Event Cancellation

The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA: Chairman Shigeki Ishizuka), a CP that was scheduled to be held for four days from February 24th.+2022 Pacifico Yokohama Venue Event has been canceled and it has been decided to hold it online alone.

CP+2022 is an event to be held in the Corona disaster, with “safety and security of visitors and exhibitors” as the most important matter, and on the premise of taking thorough safety measures, we aimed to hold a hybrid between the Pacifico Yokohama venue and online. We have been preparing.
However, due to the rapid expansion of Omicron strains since the beginning of the year, the number of infected people and close contacts is increasing rapidly, and the supply of antigen test kits is tight, which is hindering safe event management. In addition, looking at the current infection situation, it is unlikely that the number of infected people will decrease significantly by the end of February, and it will be unlikely that the event will be held safely and securely. The psychological anxiety of the people is in a situation where they cannot be wiped out.
As the organizer, I have always kept an eye on the corona infection situation and took all possible measures, but I give top priority to the safety and security of visitors, exhibitor staff, and all other people involved in the event. As a result, CP in this situation+We decided that 2022 should not be held in real time, so we decided to cancel the Pacifico Yokohama venue event and hold it online alone.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to many customers who have been looking forward to the event at Pacifico Yokohama for the first time in three years, but we appreciate your understanding.
We also sincerely apologize for the announcement of the cancellation just before the event.

You can continue to enjoy online events with your registered ID and password.
We look forward to your participation in the online event.
