Finally, a zoom lens designed and built to work the way you do—instead of way lenses were used in 1950. Seventy years ago, photographers shot 35mm film and most cameras had 50mm lenses. That focal length was selected as the standard because the perspective it captures is close to what the human eye sees normally—minus the peripheral vision.
You don’t use your camera in the limited ways that were predominate long ago, before digital. You capture still images, but you also shoot video, so you need a more versatile zoom, and that changes everything. Finding a zoom lens highly suitable for both stills and videos has been challenging—unless you were willing to carry around a lens that is bigger and heavier than average. Challenging—until now.

People enjoy photography in many different ways, but one thing we all have in common: experiencing that moment of regret we feel when there is a shot we want to take but don’t have our camera—or the right lens—with us.
TAMRON has succeeded in making the 20-40mm F2.8 smaller and lighter, coming it at just 86.5mm (3.4 in) long and weighing only 365g (12.9 oz). This is a walkaround lens that you can keep on the camera all day and be confident you never miss a photo opportunity in daily life or when traveling.
TAMRON created the 20-40mm F2.8 as a new option for a fast-aperture standard zoom lens, especially as a vlogger’s standard zoom, and as a regular everyday, take everywhere lens.
The 20-40mm F2.8 is compatible with full-frame mirrorless cameras AND starts at the breathtaking 20mm focal length. Taking advantage of the benefits of the 20mm ultra wide-angle at the wide end, dynamic natural landscapes that emphasize perspective are just the beginning.
Set at the 40mm standard focal length, the lens works well in a wide range of shooting scenes, including snaps and portraits that make use of the beautiful bokeh at F2.8.
When combined with the in-camera crop function or on an APS-C mirrorless camera, the lens covers a focal length range equivalent to 30-60mm in full-frame format. For those who find 40mm to be not quite enough for their purposes, this lens offers a 20-60mm equivalent zoom range on a full-frame camera by activating the in-camera crop function without swapping lenses.
The versatile 20-40mm F2.8 covers from the ultra wide-angle commonly used in video shooting to the standard focal range with a single lens. Additionally, with its compact and lightweight design, the lens is well balanced even when accessories like a camera grip or gimbal stabilizer are attached, unlike heavier weight-forward zooms. All in all, it’s a good choice for vlog shooting. When shooting at the 20mm wide end, you can shoot selfies that include the background, something that’s difficult to do even with a 24mm focal length.
For accurate and quiet autofocusing, the lens is equipped with an impressively quiet VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism. This delivers stress-free focusing and excellent focus tracking of moving subjects. As the lens offers an F2.8 aperture across the complete zoom range, you can also enjoy video shooting that makes use of beautiful bokeh.
The 20-40mm F2.8 also features excellent close-up shooting capabilities, with a Minimum Object Distance of 0.17m (6.7 in) at the 20mm end and 0.29m (11.4 in) at the 40mm end. The ability to record a variety of scenes with its wide angle-of-view that would be captured using a mobile phone expands the possibilities of expression.
