First wild Sony A1II rumors: Same 50MP sensor, new AI features

Share

I know from reliable sources that the Sony A1II will be on the market in 2025. But that is all I know for sure. What I can share today is a message from a new source about the possible specifications of the Sony A1II. Keep in mind that new sources are obviously unreliable, but I believe that these specifications he mentioned might still be close to reality. Let us therefore read his message:

There’s a high probability the A1m2 will drop before end of year. But the very end of year. The only reason it would be in Jan 2025 would be bc of production issues. I’m told same chip…just the updates we expect AI chip etc, and in same body.No A9III body. The A93 body would be a Mark 3 version bc of existing grip and cages etc and customers. Prototypes are in the wild.

I hope reliable sources can soon confirm or deny this rumor. But if I had to guess the possible specifications of the A1II, these would be more or less what the “new source” claims: Same A1 sensor but improved speed and new AI chip. Why do I think that?

Honestly, the 50MP sensor is still the best in class. I don’t think there is a need for a high-resolution version. Also, since this is a camera for the best image quality with the best possible speed, global shutter is not an option. It is hard to sell a flagship camera that has a dynamic range 1/3 stop lower than its predecessor. I am more surprised to hear that it will keep the same body. The A9III has the best body so far, and it doesn’t seem fair for the A1II to fall short. What do you guys think?

Rumored Sony A1II specs:

  • 50MP (same Sony A1 sensor)
  • new AI chip
  • improved frame rate
  • best in class autofocus
  • C2PA authentication
  • SD+ CFexpress Type A 4.0 generation dual hybrid slot
  • same A1 body style (no upgrade to the A9III body)
  • Announcement between November 2024 and January 2025
