(SR4) UPDATED -> Sony will launch a new camera on November 18!
SonyAlphaRumors has got an important information from one of our most trusted sources. Sony is ready to launch a new camera on November 18! The camera will have the new (4/3 ?) exmor sensor and Full HD video recording. With the camera Sony wants to compete against the Panasonic GH1.
UPDATE: The only thing we know is that Sony will launch a direct GH1 competitor on mid November. This will be the first Sony camera with Video recording! We do not know if the camera will be the first model of a mirrorless system. We are working to get more infos!
UPDATE2: Most of the mystery is given by the “4/3″ sign. We don’t know if it means that:
1) Sony will become a strong competitor of the Panasonic GH1 camera (which has a 4/3 sensor)
2) Sony will use a 4/3 sensor but with a proprietary mount
3) Sony will join the MicroFourThirds system
Option 1 is the more realistic answer.
Keep following us in the next days.
UPDATE: We downgraded the rumor from SR5 to SR4. We heard the source again and he still confirms the rumor. Anyway we thought we should only give SR5 value when we have a real proove (image or whatever).

Sony Alpha 550 Digital Camera Review

Some details about the Sony mirrorless camera....
(SR5) Sony REAL mirrorless cameras to be unveileded in May
unbelievable!
WOW! Sony is jumping into the boat!
can’t wait
Will this be the killer still camera with video everyone is waiting for?
30fps only = fail
weak codec = fail
strong rolling shutter = fail
no 1080p = fail
strong moire = fail
strong aliasing = fail
no full manual controls = fail
no live output = fail
Let’s hope they’ll not fail…
If this really pushes through, I would like Sony’s effort to support the old manual focus lenses from Konicas and Minoltas or even the Nikon AIS.
That would be outstanding!
You don’t mention anywhere whether this camera is mirrorless or not.
No idea if it is mirrorless!
Ok, thanks for clearing that!
Could it be a fixed lens solution like R1?
there has recently been a RX1 mirrorless sony rumor, was classified as fake on the basis that we have had enough of xX1’s (SX1, WX1, CX1, NX1… it (the X1 designation) usually means starting a new series after a not so successful one, for example we still don’t have a GX1 (neither canon nor panasonic, because they haven’t yet been deemed as failure). most probably here is what sony specs will be:
APS-C, interchangeable lenses, no evf no ovf, Sensor Shake Stabilization (aka SSS yet not exactly Super Steady Shot), tixy-pixy body style (very unlike R1), Memory Stick Nuo (new card format to go with new camera format), mediocre video of about 848×480 autoINTELLIGENT Xposure camera controls everything ‘cos it knows better than you. price 800$ without lens or flash. designed by the same team who made the A230/A330/A380.

they look very intelligent themselves, aren’t they?
Do we know why would Sony diversify from Full Frame & APC in favour of 4/3 ?
http://www.pbase.com/paulsilkphotography/image/97100362.jpg
4/3 gives less coverage, potentially can make your lense investment worthless …
Sounds like a potential “dilute” of the camera market, rather than strengthening its position ?
A APS-C mirrorless? very, very, very probably… but 4/3, very, very, very doubtful
Samsung, “Ricoh”, Leica and “Sigma” moved to APS-C, why would Sony move to 4/3 designing APS-C sensor themselves?
Mirrorless APS-C with 720p30 video would be sweet. But, knowing Sony, it’ll come with 1080i video and a label that says Full HD…

why would you do that to us?! your english no matter how bad is unlikely to be worse than our Dutch, here is roughly what i understood witout resorting to online translation or dictionaries:
remains to be seen which sensor they are going to use and also if the mirrorless [systems] remain one [single] lens mount? http://sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-…n-november-18/ in my opinion there is a big chance that sony and nikon will use the same sensor in their [mirrorless cameras].
somebody correct me if am wrong, am almost sure of the second part after the link (which takes you to nowhere BTW), geen goed nederlands.
All these 4/3 mirror-less…. not very exciting…..
Sony!
Please give us FF with HD video before Canon releases 5D mkii 24p firmware!
Then you have my cash.
There are a few of us who are more interested in these cameras for their video capabilities than their still image abilities, I see a few here, and I count myself as one… Full frame is pointless, perhaps even detrimental for video use, especially if your doing such a low resolution such as 1080p. Even APS-C, as evidenced by the Canon 7D can work against you. The processing required to scale the image down to 1080p can produce artifacts and has other performance robbing side effects. 4/3 Sensor is much more suitable for video use and although professional photographers will still want to work with FF and APS-C, especially for images that need to be blown up or go to print, videographers and casual consumers would be much better off with a smaller sensor with lower resolution, if marketing can get over the megapixel race. Obviously these new compacts are targeted primarily for non-professional users or those professionals who need a compact system to augment their DSLRs and are well aware of the limitations.
I tend to dislike Sony products, both camera and camcorders, and had high hopes for the new Olympus E-P2, but I will tell you, if Sony provides 1080p at 23.976, 29.97 (30 for the PAL markets too please), audio at 24/48 and a decent line level input and a sensor that is at least as good as the Panasonic and Olympus m4/3 units, I will jump ship as soon as it is released. Embracing a standard lens mount, such as 4/3, m4/3, M, etc… would be extremely beneficial, otherwise I’ll have to look for adapters for quality glass. Using a non-Sony memory storage product would be nice too, but I don’t expect too much. Just give me the adequate video performance and that will be enough for me to buy in. As an aside, AVCHD using the lite profile, or lack of B-frame support for motion, and a low-bandwidth does not count as adequate, otherwise I would be shooting a GH1 now.

Hi Tom,
The size of the sensor is irrelevant when it comes to downscaling to 1080p resolutions – Full frame will generally still give you larger pixels (hence better low-light capabilities) and better depth of field isolation. What DOES matter is the number of megapixels the sensor has (whether full frame, aps-c or 4/3rds) – for video, the LESS megapixels the sensor has the better (less aggressive downsampling required). This is entirely independent of the size of the sensor.
