(SR4) UPDATED ->The Sony A-700 has been discontinued in Holland. The Alpha 800 is coming!

November 26, 2009 rumors 10 Comments - Write a comment

One of our reader J.V from Holland just received the information from Sony Europe directly!

Here you have the original message in dutch:
“From: SONED.NL.Contact@eu.sony.com
To: xxx@xxx.nl
Sent: Wednesday, November 25, 2009 4:28 PM
Subject: Re: Webform Enquiry from x(Case: 2519xxxx)

Geachte heer V.,

Sony Support”

In short:

“True, the DSLR-A700 is no longer available. The DSLR-A700 will be replaced by the Alpha 8 series.”

-

(SR2) “the a700 successor will have video and AF with video/LV through main sensor.
It will be APS-C and not FF, its display will be a tilting LED and not a LCD and a good OVF.
” (Just speculation or does he really know the truth?)

I cant wait for a700 replacement. I was holding off buying my 2nd Sony Dslr because of its replacement.

What I hope it will have
1.A GREAT OPTICAL VIEWFINDER, 2.FULL MANUAL CONTROL OVER ALL ASPECTS OF THE VIDEO MODE 3.EXTERNAL MICROPHONE CAPABILITY’S, 4.FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE AUTO FOCUS CAPABILITY’S EVEN IN LOW LIGHT 5. More professional looking body maid with more professional material, and of course hope it will be WEATHER SEALED, because us photo journalists sometimes find our selves in harms way and in bad weather, your camera failing you takes away from you concentration (also weather sealed on the battery grip, the current a700 grip doesn’t even look “weather resistant” I can see a huge gap on the bottom. 6 DEDICATED TOP SCREEN DISPLAY WITH LIGHT 7. tilting screen, thats a MUST if there going to go with putting video 8. MAKE IT LOOK MORE LIKE THE A900/A850 CAMERAS ( those cams are so cool looking lol), 8. Of course it take CF cards but instead of the Sony memory duo thingy put a sdhc card slot like the a550 so we can write our jpegs to the sd cards and the raw files to the CF. 9.ability to use camera with no lens attached (pinhole photography is fun). 10. more accurate metering system. 11. keep ael lock. 12.camera scene preview like the a900/a850. 13.high fps around 7fps( although I only use single shot even with sports) priced around $1800 or less

A problem with the weather sealing is that the contact points on the mount would be a problem since there isn’t any water tight lenses offered by Sony. However Ive heard people having great succes with there alphas in the rain with no protection what so ever.

“9.ability to use camera with no lens attached (pinhole photography is fun)” – ALL of the Sony DSLRs have it, so A700 successor will too :)

“However Ive heard people having great succes with there alphas in the rain with no protection what so ever.” – I guess I’m one of them too. My A200 works great, despite of surviving few very rainy days.

The successor to the DSLR-700 an 800 series camera? Doesn’t sound right to me. If the sensor is APS-C, it will be a 700 series camera (to avoid consumer confusion) and I hope that Sony is going to offer a competitive camera to the Canon EOS 7D. If they don’t, that’s a huge gap in their lineup and I can’t imagine they would permit that. Moreover, there’s too many people with a lot of APS-C glass that would have no incentive to continue with Sony if they don’t produce a competitive APS-C camera to the EOS 7D.

One final though, the DSLR-A800 will most likely be the entry level FF camera competing with Nikon D700. I think Thom Hogan has it right.

Hi sky if not mistaken the a900/a850 has no fire when no lense attach option. Im not 100% sure on that. Im glad that your a200 survived as well

This e-mail shouldn’t be regarded as a trustworthy source AT ALL . It contains some serious misspelling which you would not expect from any support-department. For instance: ‘tog’ is the slang version for the correct ‘toch’ spelling. There are more issues with the text.

Generally speaking, first-line support departments are seldom aware of any product updates before they reach the news.
